Jensen Mod10-35 vs. Celestion Ten-30
« on: September 05, 2019, 12:40:47 pm »
I am hoping to build a little 2X10 cabinet for general purpose use and testing the amps I build.  I am looking for affordable yet quality speakers that would work well for this application.  The Celestion Ten 30 and the Jensen Mod 10-35 both seem to check the boxes quite well.  Both are similarly priced at under 40.00.   Both have similar frequency response and power handling.

Not sure whether to go with 2 Jensens or 2 Celestions or maybe one of each?

Any experience or suggestions?  Thoughts?

If by testing the tube amps you build you mean using this cabinet to make tonal/tweaking decisions, I would not skimp and go with just any ol' cheap $40 speaker. Get the speakers that you would use live and/or in the studio. If it's just plug it in and make sure it doesn't sound like total garbage, or even works at all... well that's another story... either one would be fine I would think.

That's just me though.

Right now all I have is some vintage alnico organ speakers we plug into. I am afraid if I build around them, it will likley sound crappy through a real stack. They are  hardly a modern day reference or representation of what is commonly used for guitar.

I guess I am looking for a little bit of both of what you mentioned.  A standard that I come back to with each build so I can tell where I am at tonally. Which amps are brighter and which are darker etc.

Since I don't play myself it is more a plug it in and make sure it doesn't sound like garbage effort.  Looking for something that is relatively benign and neutral as a starting point.  Can tweek to specific sound later if so desired.

Has OP chosen any tens yet? I'm in the market for a couple tens myself,  have been trying to decide on which "tier".

The Jensen MOD / celestion 10 thirty tier?

The jensen C10/ eminence / celestion VT JR tier?

Or

The jensen alnico/ eminence signature / celestion creamback tier?

I just recently grabbed a Celestion G10 Greenback that I'm enjoying.
I got it mostly for a medium drive bluesy type SE amp that I want to drive pretty hard at around 10 watts.
One reason I got this specific speaker was to drop a few db(s) from the 100db sensitivity speaker I was using.
This one comes in at 95db and has done a nice job of taking the edge off.

Robin Trower used 4 x 10" cabs on his early studio recordings.

Have you ever looked at WGS- Warehouse Guitar Speakers?

We ended up doing a 2X12 using Johnson Premium speakers out of some Johnson JT50 Mirage amps. I am guessing they are some sort of JBL sourced speakers as Johnson was owned by Harmon at the time which also owned JBL.

The amps had scratchy pots and weren't being used much.  It sounds pretty awesome on any amps we have built so far.  I may still revisit the 2X10 cab later.

I did look at WGS but they were about 30%-60% more than the cost of the Jenson and Celestion options mentioned.

Yeah, when WGS first got popular a lot of the appeal was the low price but they have really jumped up in the past few years.
