Gauge wire on PT
« on: December 06, 2019, 02:27:32 pm »
I need to extend the wire on a PT, all the filaments and CT's are 16 gauge, 600v, the HV side all 18 gauge except the HV CT is 16, all stranded poly wire.  All I have on hand is 18 gauge poly rated at 300v.

Any problem using my 300v, 18 awg wire to extend both filaments and HV sides, CT's also? I have the amp opened and hoping to get it back together ASAP.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Tell us about the amp.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Bought it used, don’t know but have the specs, l believe it’s an Allen Amp TP40D. Specs came with it: 325-0-325 or 340-0-340, 180mA, 5v@3A, 6.3v@4.5A, CT heater, 50v bias supply tap.

Going in a Deluxe Reverb build, running 6V6s and 6L6s, want either or. Will use the 325-0-325 HV. The leads are way short, butcher cut it out.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

20AWG will be fine for everything.

Thanks, my 20 gauge is solid, l’ll use the 18 strained for everything on that PT. l guess you mean the 300v is fine too.
The Deluxe Reverb style amp, single channel with reverb, l’m using this PT for, would you use the 325 side or the higher 340 side? I want to be able to use 6v6s or 6L6s, l have a 30 watt OT, 4 and 8 ohm taps.

300V wire, 340V PT, what's the difference?

300V wire doesn't blow-up at 300.1V. What it really means is: they did not pay the extra charge for a 600V test certificate.

Yes, you are off-label. Most older wiring is. Don't pinch it, or run through rough spots, etc. It doesn't fail.

Thanks on the 300v wire, l take it that it’s not a big deal which HV tap I use. Just a higher B+. One tube might like it, one not...
