6x5 Rectifier in 5C1 Build?

Hello all,

I picked up an old Webster wire recorder that uses a 6X5 rectifier, 6V6 output (SE), and a 6SJ7 preamp tube. Would it be possible to use the power transformer and 6X5 tube to power a 5C1 circuit? This is my first build and want to go with something that is simple with schematics and layouts readily available. Would I need to do anything circuit-wise to adapt to the voltages produced by the 6X5?

I think the best thing you can do is to preserve the original situation of the amp and only change the path and components (NO tubes, only resistors and cap) to respect the 5C1 circuit, accepting different voltage if they are those of the original circuit

Or, at least, change a bit the components aroud the 6SJ7 tube as to have a more "modern" arrangement

the 6x5 has some bad press although i have used several in amps and had no problems. they are not as robust as a 5y3 and cant handle as much voltage or current but for a simple champ type circuit you are fine. i have subbed 6ax5 rectifiers for my 6x5 circuits because some guys feel they are better and more robust than the 6x5. the 6ax5 has the same pinout and can just directly plug in to a 6x5 circuit but it supplies more current. some old timers claim if you run a 6x5 hard its cathode can short to the filament and take out the power transformer, but other guys claim the myth comes from a specific poorly designed zenith radio which used a 6x5 which was overly taxed in the circuit which caused it to short and take out the transformers of that radio set. i dont know i just know that a 6x5 should be able to barely handle a champ circuit so i use 6ax5 in such circuits because they can handle more power transfer. theres alot about it online but it led me in circles. good luck whatever you do.

If the 6x5 on the Webster recorder is still alive I think that he has no problems in that circuit

PRR:  Probably too much gain, but I exaggerated a little on the rawk.
Tubenit:  I am currently rebuilding the Mandalay based on the 5879 power boost in the t-lite reverb as soon as the shop cuts the chassis.  I'm using 7591s for power in it.  Great sounding amp but not up to snuff in the layout department.  I may also make a Morph to replace the one I sold but with 7591s as well.  Thanks for all the responses my friends, sh
