Switch questions....
« on: February 12, 2020, 06:16:11 am »
I am attempting to understand more about switches and manufacturers model numbers in terms of switch function.  So far I am completely confusing myself.

I am attempting to find a full size On-On-On switch to use for selecting "normal-bright-both" channels in my 6973 Plexi build.  In several schematics, I find Sluckey recommending use of the C&K 7211SYZQE and I could certainly use that but it is a mini toggle and I would like to use a full size bat handle switch.  The ON-ON-ON version is listed as a SP3T switch which I understand as Single Pole 3 way.  I have also seen DPDT switches listed as ON-ON-ON but also as ON-OFF-ON and with various terminal configurations all under the same model number.

I have a Carling 0741R switch.  It has 6 Terminals on the back and is a 3 position switch.  Based on my tests it appears to be a ON-OFF-ON switch.  When I look it up it appears to be listed as a DPDT switch.

I also have  a Carling 1814R switch which has 4 terminals and is a 3 position switch.  Looking at it online shows several different configurations but none the same as mine.

In short, can the 0741R be wired or modified to work for my application and if not, how do I know which switch to buy when the Carling model numbers seem to mean nothing?

You cannot use either of those Carling switches to do what you want. But the 7211 comes in many styles. This is probably what you want...

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

How do you intend to connect the switch?

My approach would be to tie the inputs together and then use a single pole on-off-on switch to mute the unused channel at the wiper of each volume pot (i.e. by connecting it to ground). Middle position would be both channels on.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.   It looks like I have a choice of paying 20.00 for a fat bat like I want from a US supplier, Pay 10.00 for one of unkown brand/quality shipped from China, order a metric one from the UK which with shipping and exchange rate will cost 20+ USD, or go back to the economical and trustworthy mini toggle  :sad2:   Not happy with my choices.

I guess I will get the mini toggle for less than $3 and finish the build.  If I like the sound of the amp enough, I can always go back and get the $20 fat bat to make it right.  Also toying with the idea of using a foot-switch and relays to accomplish the channel selection if the amp lives up to my expectations which would make the switch unnecessary.

Here is the wiring method I planned to use courtesy of Sluckeys Supro S 6424 schematic which can be found here.   https://sluckeyamps.com/supro/supro.htm

I planned to steal it and use it to simplify and save space on my 6973 Plexi build.

$3 is an excellent price for a c&k 7211 switch. I'd like to get some of those. What's your source?

Actually a Carling rather than C&K but... https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/switch-carling-mini-toggle-dpdt

You have to select the On-On-On configuration in the dropdown box.  $2.79 ea.
