Matchless Tornado build
« on: March 07, 2020, 11:53:18 am »
Hello all,

I have built a handful of amp kits with success and would like to try a semi-scratch build.   I have picked the Matchless Tornado, a rare 15W tremolo amp.   I am creating the layout (could not find one online) and will share when finished if folks are interested.   In reviewing the schematic (link attached), the output of the trem circuit goes through two 0.1uf polarized caps in series and opposed.   I couldn’t find much online about this...can someone share any light on it?   I also couldn’t find any 0.1uf polarized caps above 50V so not sure how I would build it in any event.  Thank you for any help you can provide.  Link to schematic:

Note:  this is a link to the similar and more complete schematic of the Hurricane model....link to the Tornado schematic is here:  https://www.thetubestore.com/lib/thetubestore/schematics/Matchless/Matchless-Tornado-Schematic.pdf.  To muddy the waters, the Tornado schematic shows two 0.1uf NON-polarized caps, which didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

A single .05µF coupling cap will work just fine.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

thank you...any idea what the purpose is?   A .05 uf would be the same as the .1's in series, but what was matchless trying to accomplish, if you know?

They just like to be different.  :icon_biggrin:

I've seen hundreds of schematics the feed the tremolo to the grids of the output tubes. Never seen back to back caps used in any of them.

Here are some example that I have built...

Thank you, these are very useful.   I am also planning on adding a footswitch for the tremolo, a master volume, and a switched pre-amp coupling cap between the .0022uf specified value (which seems low) and .022uf.
