Cigar Box Amp
« on: May 09, 2020, 06:55:49 am »
Hi, its been a while since I last posted and I hope you and yours are all well and in one piece.

I'm building a cigar-box guitar and I was thinking of also building an amp to go with it. Something low-power, a bit gnarly sounding when required, which is probably most of the time, maybe single ended? that could be built into a cigar box (not the guitar!), and with a small speaker, maybe in a separate cab? Recommendations for 6"-8" speakers welcome.

Any thoughts or experiences you can share?

Cheers VB.

I used a Weber ALNICO SIGNATURE 6S with an Ampeg J12B Jet amp built into an old radio cab. It has a warm sound that goes well with the Ampeg sound. I've been very pleased. I don't know how it would sound with a gnarly sounding amp.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Very low powered but not single ended                 Mini-bassman or 5E3

I am a beginner at amp work, but I have been playing a Kalamazoo Model two for harmonica for several years. I have built a CBG that uses a single coil pick up and they sound pretty good together. Gnarly should not be an issue. I am also a fan of weber speakers, if you want to up the gnarly factor a harmonica cone speaker might be the ticket, call them and ask they are very helpful.

What I would say about the model two is that if I were doing what you are I would take out the tremolo. I am not a fan of how mine works and for your purpose it should do fine without. I think it will fit in a cigar box, but you might have to wait for the right box to come along. Go make friends with someone at the smoke shop. . .

Thanks All,

Timbo - love that cab sir. I takes talent to make something look good that's kinda rough at the same time.
Sluckey - love the old radio and thanks for pointing me at the Weber 6".
Tubenit - I do like that micro bassman sound clip. I'll look into these micro -amps more.

This forum is just the best place.
