Help Understanding Current for Chokes
« on: August 19, 2020, 07:46:13 am »
Howdy all, need some help understanding some theory so that I can properly source parts for an upcoming build.  I'm looking at doing  a Marshall-based (really Friedman-based) 2x6V6 push-pull build with 3 12AX7's.  Final schematic is still to be finalized, but I've included a clip of Hoffman's 6V6 plexi to help facilitate discussion.  Using some online calculators, total current requirement for the HT should be somewhere in the vicinity of 80-ish mA's.  I'm trying to think through the required choke size.  Looking at other 2x6V6 builds online, many (including Hoffman's 6V6 plexi) have used smaller 50mA-rated chokes.  Is this because the power going to the plates (via the OT) comes off prior to the choke?

yes
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

The current a choke will take happily depends on the diameter of it's winding. As was said already.
