Recone Vintage Speaker or Modern Reproduction - Jensen C12Q
« on: September 21, 2020, 10:37:53 pm »
I recently discovered that one Jensen c12q is blown (no sound just static) in my twin Twelve Silvertone 1484.
I love leaving vintage components as much as possible. But I wonder if its worth it here and I will only get the old look of the original basket.

How do you think the reconed vintage sound will compare to a new C12Q? seems that they would be very similar.
It likely will cost me twice as much to recone than buying new.
I have been told (Weber) that the original might need magnet work as well

Weber does a range of Jensen style vintage speakers that are way better than the RI Jensens IMHO (and they also sell recone parts suitable for many vintage Jensens)

My experiences matches Tubeswell's. I tried the Italian made Jensen RIs years ago. Weber's, including the inexpensive Signature series are better. I have also bought reconed vintage Jensens and liked them better than the RIs too. The term RI is used very loosely in this case, as recone kits for vintage Js do not fit the RIs.

Weber sells a Jensen C12Q replacement 12F125A which is about the same price as their recone service.
Would I be better served to go with the original recone?
or the Weber?

That's a toss-up IMO. So I'll just tell you what I would do. Buy the Weber and save the original speaker in case you ever decide to sell the amp. Then you can include the Weber and the original, stating that it needs a recone.

12F125a or 12a125a are both excellent speakers

Just a followup....
I reconed the original at Speaker Repair Pros located in SoCal. Bao was the lead repair tech from OC Speakers.
Fast repair, excellent work and sounds great.
The original voice coil had separated and wire came off.
No wonder it didn't work
