Mesa boogie 400+ vs Ampeg SVT CL
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have decided to shelve my idea of building an audio amp using RF tubes, ( cost, size and not knowing what it is going to sound like until I have it done $$$$$$$$) So I have decided to choose between one of the above mentioned amps. Is one substationally better than the other or are they both a subjective choice since they both cost about the same?

I don't know anything about the Mesa Boogie 400.
I do know that M-B made their reputaion on overdriven guitar amps. Knowing how to overdrive an amp might give them a bit of insite into how not to do that as well.

Ampeg's SVT is sort of the gold standard of tube bass amps.
The only things I've ever heard bad about them is that they are heavy and too loud for some places.

theyre both cool amps. i dig the ampeg more tho, but its a matter of personal taste. The bassist in my band recorded 2 cds through the SVT and it sound dope!

i'm gonna build an SVT one of these days. The only thing that sux is that its almost as expensive to build it as to buy it on ebay. The amount of iron it needs is absurd.

if you're interested, i did some "preliminary" layout sketches a few months back for the SVT

www.geocities.com/coap01 there should be a link there for that.

 Hey guys,
I know this subject has come up before and I will again give my .02 WHat about a bass amp based on the Marshall Major? Everyone I tell this story to claims I am full of it - but I have the hearing loss to prove it. I could run my Major with one 4x12 cab on 7or8 and completely wipe out my bass player's SVT running wide open with both cabs. Different freq's, I know, however, the Major's were serious animals. 4, KT-88's at 630v U.L. makes for some serious headroom. You could build one of these guys for half what you would pay to build the two you mentioned. If the original tone stack is not good for you, use another or tweak it to taste. A lot of iron cost, but overall way cheaper. Check the archives, I believe bnwitt was in the process of building one and had all the iron spec'ed out. Just another option. Good luck! Oh, and also make sure you use =C= KT-88's at that plate voltage, none of the others last.
