Vintage Speaker Repurposing(Cheap)
« on: December 09, 2020, 08:12:42 am »
In my ever expanding search for killer vintage tone, and being as fiscally challenged as we are, it was decided there would be no spending extra money on new old stock “vintage” speakers/cabs in this current climate. So, after haggling with my “boss”, she decided it would be ok for me to use some existing stuff laying around the shop and bring it into the house, as long as it wasn’t hideous. And thus, the super cheap 1x10”-1x12” can was born!! Some years ago a guitarist from a band I was in at the time gave me a bunch of jbl speakers that were part of the audio system in a bar we used to play. I gutted one of the boxes that contained a 10” woofer w/small mid and plate tweeter. Cut a 12” hole where the mid/tweet were, and mounted a 10” w/small alnico from an old console stereo from the late 50’s in the factory hole, and a 12” alnico from a 60’s conn organ in the new. Made a slight mod to the speaker wire connection for a 1/4” input jack, and bam!! I’ll tell you what, sounds pretty damn good! I’m not terribly comfortable pushing it too hard, but really, I don’t have to. The 5f1 clone pushes it perfectly well, and my el84 that pushes approx 5w sounds incredible!!! My bugera g5 on .5w setting is as bold as I’ve gotten, so it would seem, as it seems to be pushing the 10” near its max, so I’m not 100% confident on my wattage ratings from the other amps I’ve built lately. All in all, I’m super happy with the sound, and the unremarkable appearance of the housing allows me to fly it under the radar w/my wife!!

Ok if it works.  The Conn organ speaker should be fine if used within its specs.  The other drivers seem to be for hi-fi.  They don't have the physical stamina of musical instrument speakers, so your concern for their safety is justified.

Also, hi-fi drivers are designed with parameters (Thiel-Small) for specific types of enclosures.  E.g., a driver designed for an enclosed box, or for bass reflex, expects to fight against a lot of back pressure.  In an open back cab, or larger enclosure, it's in serious danger of over-excursion.  This is especially true for woofers.
