 clean sound opinion Q

 Hi all, a friend of mine asked me to make him an amp. Its gotta be 2 channel footswitchable. A high gain channel and a clean channel. I gonna model the high gain channel after a SLO since he likes that sound, but i'm not sure what to do about the clean channel.

Does anyone have any preference/opinions on different fender amps for the best clean tone? I'm thinking a bassman (5F6) or a super reverb (AB763). Any suggestions?

 How about 70s vintage Silverface Fender for clean?
Of course, it also depends on how clean you want.

 do you have a model #? as far as how clean, pretty darn clean. I'm thinking something that will stay CLEAN all the way up until stage volume, at which point it should start to get just a little sparkle of overdrive

 Bear in mind that I am a bassplayer , I don't own anything Silverface and haven't played around many.
That said, the Siverface, CBS era Fenders have a reputaion for being too clean for a lot of guitar players.
That's not a bad thing if you play jazz or want a clean sound.
Stage volume is dependant on how loud you wanna be on stage.
Super Reverbs are pretty loud, but may not seem like it next to a 100W Marshall.
Twins are loud most anytime.

 For clean, I'd do a AB763, and if you want any overdrive, I'd use a Bassman tubed with 12AY7 and probably 12AU7s (lower MU preamp tubes).

Load the cathodes of the first couple of stages with something like 1.5K/22uF (real Fendery as opposed to 2.7K/0.68uF).

I actually built something like what you describe as my first amp: the AX84 Renegade amplifier. It used a set of relays to switch channels and it appeared to work well (quiet switching). The problem with two channel switching is that if the amp is a master volume amp, matching the levels of the two stages to click clean and boost is difficult and requires some sort of special consideration I have never figured out.

If you dont use a master volume, the boost channel will sound like a clean-tone with some grit, but not enough to be SLO-like.

Even with the hot switch mod for the Plexi amps: a foot switch would only save you the time to walk over to the amp and flip a switch: you still have to adjust the volume between the two in most situations (I have found). And on top of that, the difference between the flip of the switch is lots of gain and a little gain. You are better off doing channel switching the 'old' way (a stompbox) after you dial in a clean(er) tone sound from your amp.

(I have found the bassman tubed with 12AX7s very versitile for this type of setup: good clean tone and sounds pretty good with a pedal(s) to hotten up the sound to simulate two channels).

 yea i was thinking AB763 as well. i think i will explore that idea further. i guess the trick here will be to figure out which gain stages to bypass if i'm on the clean channel...i think i have an idea how to do it. should be fun

As far as channel switching goes, i was able to get it to work using optos, with each channel having its own master volume controls. but i'm still tweaking the switching circuit.

Pesonally i'm sorta anti-stompbox for distortion...maybe cuz i havent found one that i really like. The sansamp is decent, but its not the same as a high gain TUBE amp. just my opinion
