Dumb question on pt current and 5E3 type build
« on: February 10, 2021, 02:51:45 pm »
Hi, I've read the original 5e3 PT had about 70mA current.  I'm planning out the next PP build while I fight the current SE build.  It will be similar to 5e3 and Silvertone 1482/72.   I want to play with a prototype before I buy a brand new parts.   Do you think i can get away with a 340-0-340 PT with 60mA that I have laying about?  It will be PP, with either 2x 6v6 or 6k6, 2x 12a*7 and one 6au6 for silvertone like trem.   I wanted tube rectification for sag if possible, but for the prototype I can do SS if it causes issue.   The 6.3v winding has plenty of current (3.2A).  I know the 70mA is already very low for PP but part of the character of the 5e3.  However, with the added 6au6 (2-3mA), 60mA might just be very problematic.

6v6 looks like PP 70mA is the zero-signal plate current, while 6k6 looks like PP 52mA.  However, with 340-0-340, I might have issues with too much plate voltage on the 6k6.
