Supro 1696TN scratch build question
« on: March 16, 2021, 07:54:37 am »
Hi all,  I'm considering the above amp and had a question on the hand-drawn schematic done by Bill Kahle.  Channel 1 shows the first preamp triode directly grounded.  The trem channel has the usual 1k5/35uf cathode circuit and that ties into the trem K like most other Supros.  Seems to me that channel one will run a little hot as pictured.  I would probably use a 2k2 cathode resistor like the 1624T but other thoughts are always welcome.  I'm not sure I'd even use that channel.  It is my unshakeable belief that accordian players need to bring their own amp to the jam.
PS  Thanks for all the folks who have contributed to my other Supro threads over the last six months.  If you are in suspense, I ended-up making a very nice 6V6 1624T but bought a 1961 Airline GVC 9010 rather than make the 1688TN.  The amp has been for sale twice in the last four years and is absolutely pristine --- caps are all in spec -- not even any dust on the cab bottom.  If you search Google for that model almost all of the pictures are of that unit.  It did have a pair of RCA 6L6s rather than the 7027's on the schematic so someone must have played it once.  Jensen P12PS with the whizzer cones which suit it well.
Thanks again and good luck with your projects.  sh

Channel 1 shows the first preamp triode directly grounded.
That's called grid leak bias. Also notice the cap and the very large grid leak resistor? That's all part of the grid leak bias scheme. That channel will sound and perform differently than the cathode biased channel. I'd build it as drawn. If you don't like it you can always change later.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thanks Steve.  I've heard of that but most of my experience is with later Fender-style builds.  I'll give it a shot.  Cheers, sh
