ORANGE TH30 simplified build advice and help
« on: May 27, 2021, 01:54:43 pm »
Hi,
this build was an attempt to build something similar to 2 channel TH30 amp, but with two EL84 output tubes instead of four and two 12AX7 less in the preamp.  ( Conversion of an old build, hence the restrictions).
Power amp I copied from Orange Dark Terror amp (similar to many other Orange 2xEL84 amps). And Vox and Matchless...
Original schematics:

Two channels in preamp section were pretty similar, so I ditched 1st tube in Dirty channel and rearranged switching to get two channels similar to original. Only now there are not 2 completely parallel channels but rather cascaded/combined gain stages. And 1 tube less in preamp :-)

The part I am not so sure about is effects loop tube (which I don`t need) , or if I simply erase it and connect preamp outputs with PI would it be ok? Regarding signal voltages and all.

The original circuit has channel output mixing via resistors, voltage dividers actually, which formed 150k/470k when clean, and 470k/150k when dirty channel engaged.

I decided to wire channel outputs via relay to keep them separated ( and to address volume difference later) , and put temporarily pre PI master volume to control levels for time being.
I am not sure whether I should keep this PrePI Master at all ( when in Dirty mode I have two volume controls essentially in parallel). But I need some kind of channel level adjusting in case I ditch it.
Would really appreciate some input regarding this part of circuit. And other parts, as well, if there is something that should be made differently.
Thanks

Keep the tube, just bypass Send and Return jacks

Hi,
thanks for the input.
The thing I have not mentioned is that this is conversion of an old tube console of which I am using only the cool antique box, chassis and output transformer. Everything else built from scratch actually,  as in second schematics I posted. 3x 12AX7 tubes ( 2 preamp, 1 LTPI ) and 2x EL84

It is up and running, does not sound bad at all, clean channel is very bright though ( Ice picking bright ) and dirty channel is really good and goes from crunchy to lush singing distortion over the top  :icon_biggrin:   Only downside is channel interaction, i.e. Clean volume pot becomes Dirty gain 1 pot when switched, which I try to remedy with that switched second pot in the ground leg of the Clean volume pot. It sort of works.

I tried both Top cut and Cross line Master control ( ala Vox, Matchless), but settled for NFB as in original schematics (only 6k8 from 16 Ohm tap), because
NFB really tames and tightens overdrive channel. Also tames highs in clean channel a bit, although I like clean channel better without NFB ( It has that 3D sound hard to describe. Well, not so hard, like AC-15  :icon_biggrin:

Back to channel levels, I did some measuring yesterday and this is what I got at the output switch ( RLY2, or prior to Master volume)

With 200mVp-p sinus input signal I get around:
Clean channel  5.2 Vp-p max clean signal,  7 V max ,               3.2 Volts when at 1/2 Clean Volume pot
Dirty channel    no clean signal                  15 Volts p-p max,    5 Volts when at 1/2 Dirty Volume pot

What would be the simplest way to balance those levels?  Would it suffice to only pad the Dirty channel output, lets say with 470k on wiper of the Dirty volume pot?
And leave Clean channel as is?

Any input highly appreciated,   thanks

Simplest way is to just turn the dirty volume pot down.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!
