Film capacitors substituting for electrolytics
« on: July 05, 2021, 12:26:25 pm »
I just learned the other day that one could substitute large film caps for electrolytics in the filter section.   Main advantage appears to be the availability of huge voltage capacity ratings as compared to electrolytics, as well as durability and their most common failure mode.

I have a bunch of smaller WIMA film caps that I've used in projects using Merlin's boards.  It seems to me that I should be able to use these as cathode bypass caps -- right?  The ones I have are appropriately rated voltage wise.

Of course, these are not polarized.  Are there any special techniques to using these non-polarized caps in place of the electrolytics I am used to?

no
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

i keep a decent supply of 1uf and 2.2uf 50v axial film caps on hand for recapping old (70s/80s) peaveys so that the next schlub who has to recap only has to replace the larger electro caps. i don't hear any special difference between electro/film caps in that capacity but i figure they'll likely never need changing

Take a look at this, film caps for a power supply in a Fender modded to dumbel amp;
