Power supply for Kustom Defender V30
« on: October 26, 2021, 01:29:18 am »
Bought four of these little power transformers a couple years ago on , eBay.
From what I could glean from photos of the Defender V30 online the PT looks like the smaller Basler BE32880001 P06A 0610 400v 4A filament supply and 28vct. The HT is 340v @120vac , unloaded no bridge
Gonna find out what AUTOKRUISE™ biasing is.
I've seen a few posts on the bigger Basler transformers that have the 6amp filament supply. I have a few of those too.
I've used that bigger Basler PT in a cathode biased amp with 2-6n2ps & 2-el34s into a 6k3 output transformer. That amp is pretty good the transformers don't get hot. Probably about a 30watt output transformer on that amp.
Actually attached one of these smaller Basler PT's to that amp. It got a little warm , probably would work with a higher load but , that's another thing. 4A Filament supply should run a pair of el34's. I just tucked the 28vct windings away. I'm kinda lazy.
I originally built the other amp with a 5e3 power supply but , hey I wanted to use those el34's. That 5e3 power supply was a hoot , I wasn't brave enough to stick some of the cheap 6v6 tubes I had in it. It has the bridge rectifier even. The PT will squat down pretty good with the 5e3 filter section.

I bought the parts to build the bias supplies and the 12vdc filament supply but , got sidetracked.  I didn't think to get all the fuses for this experiment.

The Defender V30 schematic is slightly different from the Kustom 72 Coupe. Not a lot though. I'm guessing Kustom just put a new dog on the side of bus and sold it as a something new. Few extra doodads here and there. 36 Coupe = Defender V30 ?

Heck I don't wanna build a Defender V30 , I just wanna build it's power supply. Something simpler is what would make me happy as far as a amp.
Gonna play around with this in my new/old Baldwin test chassis.

I'm not a trained electronics technician and thought L1 and L2 were tiny chokes.
Like the ones I see and scavenge from old computer ATX power supplies.
I'll use a bridge out of one for my 12v heaters.
If you look close you'll see a red and blue wire looped a couple times , thru a ferrite bead. That's it.

Here , Pierre Disko , repairs what looks to be the DC heater supply.
Spoiler alert. He plays the repaired amp a bit afterward. My hearing is not real good but , the amp don't sound too bad.
I'll probably , use a Matchless Spitfire preamp stuck on the power amp section design from the V30.

To clear up some of the unknowns on the little Basler BE32880001 P06A 0610 power transformer.
Start up B+ is 480v then it settles down to 427v. That is with 122vac wall voltage.

I have said I built a amp with the bigger Basler PT (BE32901001) , I plugged the little Basler into it just to get those voltages.

The amp I call #10 is quieter than many amps I seen people drool over. I'll redo it soon as I get the V30 power supply built.
Here are some voltages from that amp using the bigger PT (BE32901001)
B+414v (440v start up)
Plate to Ground 405v. Cathode to plate 377v Voltage across the 300ohm 10 watt cathode resistors is 25.8v.
Cathode to screen 336v , 10.5v across the 1k 10watt screen resistors.
B. node is a 1k5 10watt resistor 373v
C. node is a 25k 5watt resistor 279v.

James Brown really piled on those 47uF 500v capacitors  in the first node.
I'm guessing there's some containers with capacitors waiting to be unloaded and distributed on the coast.
I won't have the exact reservoir to test out a build just  like what he had. I'll have to stack a mess of caps.
If I get the 12v dc heater supply I'll be happy. I haven't built a fixed bias amp yet so this is all new to me. Actually I thought about doing a hybrid ez81 on with one of these smaller Basler transformers.

@122vac wall voltage with no load on the circuits.
Getting 17.65v on the 12.6v filament supply
Getting -35.27v at the bias
Just for reference 6.3v is 7.18v
Using a GBU808 rectifier
I'm more interested in just using the 12.6v DC with two 12ax7's. Can probably figure out how to get that closer to what it should be.
The Bias supply will take some more study for me to use that.
There's a lot of stuff on that -28v circuit.

The specs for the 36 Coupe have 120VAC/60Hz, 180W nominal =1.48 amps.  I'm wondering if just dropping the transformer primary with a couple .5ohm or 1ohm 10watt resistors is not crazy. .65 cents each. I have 4 of these little transformers and dropping 2 volts would line things up. It doesn't do much for the 12.6v filament or the bias but , drops the unrectified HT winding to 338v and the 6.3v winding to 7.v

Are these the only grounding points (see arrows) for these heaters ?
In essence do I just attach the outputs of 3 & 4 after the ferrite to pins 4 & 5 of each tube leaving pin 9 with no connection ?
Also would it be better to add to the resistance of R80 between C48 & C47 or add a small resistor(s) before the tubes , to make this work with two tubes instead of three ?

Not sure if I'm missing something obvious. I've never used this kind of design before and appreciate any help or suggestions.

I added a gif of the underside of the tag board used to make the bias/heater circuit. Just drilled holes for the capacitors. Using the board upside down worked better for this circuit.

Somebody at the new "Kustom" was entirely too clever for my taste. This will be cut-and-try. And try.

Although I may not use this amp design , it is a learning experience.
They used 12vdc heaters on the Defender 15H too. There they did the el84's in series.
Searching for 36 Coupe has a few interesting reads. I guess it's like a used car , you search Youtube for repairs before you buy it.
The 36 Coupe might have came with crappy tubes and the 28vct circuit has not been without problems.
I might be barking up the wrong tree but , just tucking the 28v leads away seemed like a lazy thing.
I just got a couple CL90 Themistors in the mail and will throw one on the primary. I'll wire up a couple useless 12au7's and play with the 12v see how much resistance to put in the R80 spot. Maybe add another node on the end or just a resistor. After all that hopefully the darn supply is quiet.

In the end , I'm not sure if I wanna use the DC heaters either.  :l2:
