Starting my AB763-1 build
« on: November 04, 2021, 11:19:05 pm »
Hi, new member here. I've got the last few parts for my AB763 build and am starting on my chassis work, but after looking at the 20 ga. PVC wire that I already own, I've decided to make an additional order of Doug's fabric wire. The PVC has been fine for my low current projects up 'till now, but the insulation is crap and melts when you look at it. And for all I've spent on it, and the time I will, I'm feeling like the vintage look will make me more happy. Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much of the filament wire a 763 chassis uses? I can guestimate the plain length, but I don't know how much length is taken up with the twisting of it. The rest of them I'll just buy excess, but I didn't want to underestimate the filament, since I have another amp that has a chassis return for one leg of the filaments that I want to change.

Also, I have a blank chassis, and started to lay out the transformer & tube locations to cut, but then thought to look for a template but am coming up dry. I can estimate from oblique photos I've copied, but it would be nice to duplicate the Fender measurements exactly. A straight-down photo of a 24" wide blackface chassis would be fine - my main concern is the power end - the signal end is a piece of cake.

I'm pretty excited about this build - I'll be building the cab, too.  I have a chance to redeem myself - the last amp I built was at age 20 in 1973 using parts from an old Altec 2 x 6L6 PA amp I picked up for $10. A darn sight earlier than the internet, and with only a bandmaster schematic to guide me, I was flying blind on the engineering side of things, and that beast was so full of hum I could hardly live with it.  This forum has been a great resource, and I'm looking forward to an amp that only plays noise that I play! Thanks, James
Thanks!

I've decided to make an additional order of Doug's fabric wire.

If your going to use the push back cloth wire, get several colors.

Easier to see what's going where. Use 1 color for the small preamp tubes plate, 1 color for the grid, 1 color for the K, different colors for the volume and tone control pots, reverb pots, trem pots, etc.

Fender went from only yellow cloth wire in the tweed and brown face amps to using several different colors in their black face amps.
