Deluxe Reverb - 6L6's and more headroom
« on: December 12, 2021, 05:53:12 pm »
I handwired my Deluxe Reverb Reissue using a mojotone small parts kit and am looking to get some more headroom out of the amp. I play jazz and could use a bit more clean volume when playing with louder drummers or in bigger spaces.

I was planning on putting in 6L6s and new output and power transformers to achieve this. I believe a Vibrolux PT would drop right in. Unfortunately Allen is not selling the T026 output transformer anymore, so I was thinking of putting in a bandmaster output transformer 40W with 4/8/16 Ohm taps (my speaker is a 8 Ohm cannabis Rex)

Would those transformers work fine with 6L6's? Is there anything else I would need to change on the amp? Also, would running a solid state rectifier give me more clean headroom?

I don't care about resale value as I have already modded the amp.

Yes, they will ‘work’ fine

If you want to increase the power output, Vibrolux iron seems half a job, why not Super Reverb spec?
The PT, choke, OT and HT caps are the key components to uprate.
But a DR is a pretty nice amp to have available, be aware the changes will turn it into a heavy, unwieldy beast, and you may be able to pick up a real SR for a good price.

A Hammond 290CX drops right in. Then use a Vibrolux OT.  If you keep the DR OT you will need a 4 ohm speaker.  You will need to drill for the new OT mount and move the choke between the power tubes and the PI. You will increase the headroom by a small but noticeable amount.  Its expensive......Consider a new amp for jazz like a Roland or Twin if your needs are louder.  Jim
