Where to source transformers in the UK
« on: February 15, 2022, 06:49:28 am »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking at building Rob Robinettes RR800 Micro with the EF80 power valves,

Was wondering if anyone from the UK buys their transformers for amp build anywhere in particular, some that I had my eye on through lockdown seem to have gone and the company ceased trading

So I had a look around again and I have been looking at this mains TX http://primarywindings.com/product/amp-maker-pwam01-275v-190v-160ma-6-3v3a/

I think it may be suitable but I was ideally looking for stand-up style transformers so I don't have to cut a huge square out of the chassis

This 4w output transformer may work also http://primarywindings.com/product/amp-maker-4w-push-pull-output-transformer/

I would buy the recommend Antek Toroid to keep it simple and cheap but the delivery to the UK is more than the toroid itself

Thanks guys, that's super, given me a lot to chew on, lots of choice there

VVT was the company I looked at a while back, they had great prices and a huge choice of transformers, they seemed to be a great place for the HiFi guys, Leak and Mullard Amps etc, but on their latest news they have ceased trading sadly,

-"We will be offering surplus materials for sale shortly after a stock take." was on there so maybe a few cool transformers are still about, worth emailing them to see if any amplifier types are still there

I had found modulus when looking at chassis, but realised my search engine was set to UK so wasn't bringing up any in Europe

I had not seen tube town or tonefactory before, some nice stuff one there and the Hammond chokes

Hot Rox, how did I forget to look on there, can get a few Marshall switches and feet

Primarywindings has that same transformer in standup version

I have a Danbury type in a champ amp, they don't seem to have it listed for sale on their website anymore, I will ask as that was my main choice

I have a donor amp/chassis that has a little S.E 6V6 amp with a Marshall preamp so the faceplate is all correct for a RR800, sweet! I can put the little 2w SE amp into combo cabinet for my friend who needs a cheapy,

Also found a great slightly battered marshall looking head cabinet that I can just squeeze it in, so I clear coated it to keep the battered look and all the stains [and the smell...]

Maybe you can ask Barry at Ampmaker?  barry@ampmaker.com
Or John at Primarywindings directly? john_wilkinson3@sky.com

They're both very helpful guys!
