Mullard 7600-4 Valve Tester Overhaul
« on: March 20, 2022, 10:49:49 am »
My friend was near a Mullard tester for sale, so we picked it up and after cleaning it up from being in storage it looks in good condition now, its had some cap changes but not the electrolytics, valves and sockets are clean, and mechanically its working good, the punch card switching matrix is clean, contacts appear fine with a tester, lets see what happens

There are some 16uf 350v electrolytic, I could replace those with F&T 22uf 500v, axial and roughly the same size, they need to sit low so the cover can slide on and off easily,

There are 2x 4uf 475v, that I could get 4.7uf but its hard finding some in that voltage range in large can size I will look around a bit,

All other caps are the paper tubular waxed type, am I ok to change these for polypropylene caps? Or would there be a better type, I see a lot of 630v audio type caps that would fit in there, as they need to be 500v or more

any cap that meets the capacitance and voltage should work just fine, just remember the biggest cap killer is your soldering irons heat
Went Class C for efficiency

That reminds me, must get some more smaller croc clips for more heatsinks,

I will get some caps ordered, the only difficult ones to track down are some large 4.7uf 500v with radial leads, I can fit them into these old cans and not have to modify and fiddle around with the board
