Oversized choke for vibroverb
« on: October 16, 2022, 07:13:38 pm »
Hello, recently I decided to build another 6G16 vibroverb but this time I’m using a PT with 8A worth of 6.3v winding.
This is so the amp will be able to handle the western electric 350B tubes and/or Mullard EL37 tubes.

I’m using all nos Triad transformers and had a choke on hand that’s abit bigger than the fender specs.

Fender specs are roughly 4H 90mA 100 ohm DCR

This Triad choke is 6H 160 mA 165 ohm DCR.

My own assessment is that the regulation may be greater than 6H due to not pulling anywhere near 160mA, and that there will be a few more volts worth of drop due to the higher DCR.

Now I’m sure it will work, but my question is what effect will it have if any in the sound or the circuit.

I don’t know enough about resonant frequency tuning in power supply filters , or if my mind even needs to go there.

What say you all about this ?

Regarding the inductance and resistance, I doubt there would be any audible or even measurable difference in amp performance.

With the current rating though, if it’s massive higher than normal current passed, the normal current may not be sufficient to build up the magnetic field. Or something like that, I’m outta my depth here, hopefully PRR will chip in  :dontknow:

Duncan’s PSU2 can be used to calculate HT resonance.
