Ham Radio
« on: October 25, 2022, 06:07:18 pm »
I have been involved in Ham Radio since getting my first license in 1967. I like to build tube-type Ham radio gear and have collected many parts and tubes over the years. I also do some solid state radio construction. Anyone interested can see a few pictures on my QRZ.com page. Go to the site and in the upper left hand box type in my call sign W5FH. One of my main interests is VHF/UHF work, and since antenna heigth really helps you do more, hence you see my towers. I do quite a bit of tower work for others too.  A legal-limit 144 Mhz amplifier I built is shown, it uses an Eimac 8877 triode operating class AB1 at 4 KV, puts out 1500 watts with 50 watts drive. Info on build taken from a radio magazine article. I started building tube guitar amplifiers recently. I really enjoy studying and learning more about their circuitry. My son in law is a guitarist and gigs a lot, he uses an amp I built him last year. It is a clone of the Fender HRD ML-212 with tube reverb fitted and pair of 5881's in a Deluxe Reverb cabinet. Have several more builds lined up. This forum is a great source of info and help!

  I guess you don't live near the airport? (Here if anything sticks past the 70' trees, it hooks an airplane. Maybe the turboprop (huh, website says ERJ145), maybe the WACO biplane. (The one that flop-flipped in the swamp last year; you can't kill a Waco or the Jacobs engine.))

here it used to be you'd snag an A-10, you really didn't want to snag an A10  :icon_biggrin:

maybe the WACO biplane

Had a 30 something join the Rogue Artist gallery I was at, his job at the time was painting replica's that were made here.  The company that made them had the original drawings and specs and built to those standards.  Cori could only use 1 coat base primer, and 1 coat finish, otherwise the paint exceeded the wing weight spec, he said it was a PITA to get it right!
Went Class C for efficiency

Hey PRR and shooter -
I am several miles from county airport so no issues there. Yes, the A-10 is something else. My cousin's son is an A-10 pilot of many hours, a lot of them combat hours in Middle East. I have only gotten to visit with him a couple of times about his experiences in the plane. Below is his bio:

me> Maybe the turboprop (huh.....

Huh. Look again. The local flight is either the 9-passenger Cessna 402 or, since that is discontinued (for 37 years!), the built-for-purpose 9-passenger Tecnam 2012 sporting two Lycoming 540 engines. Pistons. A six, but the four was born in 1952.

Holy crap W5FH,  you've got your own  NCTAMS LANT Det Cutler going on there.  Impressive and your lack of fear of heights is as well.
PRR,  we saw that big black freak weather over the island that flipped that biplane from across the bay as it was happening.  Don't fool with Mother Nature
