Went to a repair place that was having a closing down gear sell off extravaganza. Nothing was guaranteed to work, but prices were in the single digits... so risk worth taking. Got there a little late, so all the non-working amps were gone :( So I started looking through some dusty boxes on a back shelf... and I found everything I've been thinking of buying recently...

Fender V1030 - manuf. '97. Ceramic speaker thats got decent enough reviews online. new in box
Fender 10" Alnico Blue. manuf. '98. new in box
2 pairs of matched JJ EL34 (working), Accutronics 4EB3C1B reverb tank (working), Vox 845 wah, various two button footswitches (for upcoming builds), large roll of grill cloth, and some heavy duty cab castor wheels.
All for the princely sum of $15 Australian dollars.
Immediately got to testing the 10"speakers vs the Tone Tubby 10" Hemp cone San Rafael.
Tone Tubby has always been too dark and blanket-over-the-amp sounding for me.
Fender V1030 definite improvement. I liked it a lot. Definitely a "Fender-y" sounding speaker.
Fender 10" Alnico Blue - yikes! So good! Beautiful! Now I understand the gushing about Alnico speakers. Its not as efficient as the ceramics (which is good for me), and it breaks up when the amp is turned up unlike the V1030. Highs are clear and present but without icepick attack. Solid enough bottom end that I need to turn the Bass down when the amp starts overdriving. Mids are beautiful. With the Tone Tubby and the V1030 the Mid control was turned way down, with this speaker I'm turning the Mid up because it sounds so good.
