Copper Tape vs Faraday Tape
« on: December 02, 2022, 01:12:24 pm »
Hey guys, my 5e3 build is done, but Im waiting on a speaker from Weber so I havent mounted it in the cab yet, and by extension havent worried about putting shielding tape on the back panel. I only have 1" wide copper tape so I went to amazon to find a wider roll, and they kept suggesting "Faraday Tape". I'm wondering if any of you guys have tried it.

Here's a link, about the same price as copper tape, but it's silver and looks a bit thicker
https://www.amazon.com/ANGKEEL-Conductive-Grounding-Interference-Electrical/dp/B097HC9HR7/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2AMEFVOV4LFR6&keywords=faraday%2Btape&qid=1670007254&s=industrial&sprefix=fa%2Btape%2Cindustrial%2C437&sr=1-4&th=1

Slightly more expensive branded version
https://www.amazon.com/TitanRF-Faraday-Tape-High-Shielding-Conductive/dp/B07DVSTP9V/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2AMEFVOV4LFR6&keywords=faraday%2Btape&qid=1670007254&s=industrial&sprefix=fa%2Btape%2Cindustrial%2C437&sr=1-3&th=1

I use a faraday bag for my phone, works great!  :icon_biggrin:
either should work just fine, i've used copper tape many times to patch faraday rooms

I have not tried it, but it looks like it would work.

As an aside, I looked at the TitanRF site and was greatly amused by the high tech, high expense version of a crazy person's tin-foil hat entitled "Mission Darkness" EMF Shielded Hat for $80.   I just love technology!

Any conductive tape will work for you, but make sure that when you overlap the tape joints that there is low resistance from one piece of tape to the other, and that this portion of your Faraday cage is grounded to your chassis.

Or, you could just glue a large piece of aluminum foil to the back panel -- will work fine.   Also, aluminum tape for HVAC is cheap and works.

It is true that the copper tape is beautiful . . .

The chassis is all brown and silver, the HVAC tape might match nicer . I think I have a roll but so many of these shielding tapes are marketed "conductive adhesive" I figured that the normal foil tape adhesive wasnt conductive.

I also love how the copper tape looks, but I opened up my guitar the other day and after around a year the tape in there substantially oxidized. Mightve just been a cheap roll though

It's called patina!    And it's a feature, not a bug.   All of the copper tape I've bought from luthier shops does oxidize over time.   Customers really like to see that copper when I take pick guards off . . . it really beats the ugly (but entirely reliable) conductive paint.

Guess what the Statue of Liberty's outside skin is?
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

That's a cloth tape. It may be treated with conducty stuff, but it would not be my first choice on a surface where Nashua brand HVAC all-metal tape could be fine.

Watch the HVAC tape, 3M makes one that is shiny silver but is in fact plastic and does not conduct!

They’ll sell you left-handed gaffer tape if they think they can get away with it.
