Favorite Western Movie Bad Men

I love a good western. You can’t have a good western without a dirty, rotten, no good, unbelievably bad, badman to hate. The following are some of my favorite “love to hate” bad men:

• Karl Maulden - “Frenchy” in “The Hanging Tree”
• Lee Van Cleef “Angel Eyes” in “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”
• Henry Fonda - “Frank” in “Once Upon a Time in The West”
• Powers Boothe - “Curly Bill Brocius” in “Tombstone”
• Lee Marvin - “Liberty Valence” in “the Man Who Shot Liberty Valence”

Who are your favorite bad men?

Hay I watch a lot of westerns. I'm a big fan of Gun Smoke but I've seen every episode multiple times. So I'm branching out for unseen stuff. I watch Grit and INSP. I see a lot of actors who almost always play bad men consistently and do a great job but I never get their names. Lee Marvin makes a great bad man. So good at bad thatI avoid his movies--Har!

Gene Hackman in the Quick and the Dead played the bad guy quite well.


Favorite western in general.  Open Range   Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner

Who Shot JR??? I've seen Open Range so many times but it is a good un. I've seen Quigly Down Under a few times also. David Slingsby made a pretty good bad guy on that one

Gunsmoke was/is a great TV western. There are many many actors that appeared on Gunsmoke early in their careers. Bruce Dern, Burt Reynolds, William Shatner, DeForest Kelley, and Leonard Nimoy are just a sampling of the actors that made guest appearances. I wonder if DeForest Kelley got his inspiration for the role of Bones on Star Trek from Doc (Milburn Stone) on Gunsmoke?

Bruce Dern was a good badman in Hang 'Em High. But I think he was a better badman in The Cowboys.

The Quick and The Dead is a good movie. I have watched it  numerous times. Gene Hackman was a great badman in this movie as well as Unforgiven (Little Bill).

Quigley Down Under made me want an 1874 Sharps. I really wanted a 45/90, but you can't hunt with them in Indiana.

BTW, as TV Westerns have entered the conversation, Have Gun Will Travel is my favorite. Christmas 1959 I got a Paladin cap gun set, complete with spring loaded derringer. It was my Christmas Story Red Rider moment.

There was a kids TV show that I used to watch, T Bar V, a local copy of the Howdy Doody Show. Kids would appear on the show to celebrate their birthdays. Randy Atcher and Tom Brooks (Cactus) hosted the show. Tom Brooks was Foster Brooks's brother. Kids would sit on either Randy's or Tom's knee, say hello and wave to their friends and family. The girls discuss the features of their dolls and the boys would quick draw their guns. After drawing my pistols, I flexed my wrist to spring my derringer from my shirt sleeve. Everyone was quite impressed.

I can't remember what age range I was but for several years my request for Christmas was a new cap pistol and holster. I would go through the Sears and Ward catalog and study it a month or so in advance of which Pistol/Holster set I wanted. At our local movie house they had Gene Audrey, Zorro, The Long Ranger that they played along with the main feature movie. You could literally get admission, pop corn and a coke for less that a dollar. 

I've been doing a search for a bad man who played a lot on Gunsmoke and have seen him play on other Westerns also. Always as a bad man.He never played a star role but he was in the mix. He could generate the most awful look I ever seen that just spelled out murder and death. I don't know his name and can't find a picture to identify him, but I'll keep on looking.

Bruce Dern has been a bad boy since before color tv. He's been on most of the old popular westerns (4 episodes of Gunsmoke, two Bonanza episodes, on and on). You need a bad guy or seedy character? Call Bruce. He is the goto bad guy. Still ticking. Check it out...

While filming Cowboys, Wayne warned Dern: "America will hate you for this," and Dern replied, "Yeah, but they'll love me in Berkeley."

No. But, I had a black hat and vest. I seem to remember having a red shirt that I liked to wear with it. I'm pretty sure that I have a picture somewhere in old family photos.

Jack Elm was not the guy I was looking for but he was a Major Star Bad Guy. He had the one wondering eye that was really freaky. Bruce Dern was another good one I would call star status bad guy.
