P2P Tweedle Dee Layout Style for SLO?

Could this style of layout work for a high gain amp?
The style being the tube sockets in the middle with signal wires in between the sockets and pots, and the cathodes and power supply circuits on the other side of the tube sockets. I'd wire everything to the tube sockets the same way as this last build. I included the layout for the Tweedle Dee for a better reference.

A friend wants me to build him a 20w SLO and I'd like to focus on noise reduction in the same way if possible.
I'd make the power nodes a little neater and have more space between each tube socket for starts.

I understand layout is more crucial the higher the gain and doing my own hybrid P2P layout could be a gamble. I seem the think that method is better than having a board in between the pots and tube sockets.

I saw Rob's layout. That's actually the circuit I'm going to build. I don't want to build it into a chassis that's going to have a bunch of empty holes. I haven't previously seen the 2nd diagram.

I'd like to design my own layout for the challenge and experience. I would enjoy that more than copying a layout, but this is still the very early stages of the project, so I'm aware that radical changes in the approach are a possibility.

It's a very different challenge, IMO, to build a high gain amp with an unproven layout especially PTP.  I would advise against that idea.  Low to medium gain amps with PTP is a much safer bet to experiment with.  The amount of floor noise attempting that with a high gain amp may leave you to regret the approach.


I love creativity and coloring outside the lines. I have an appreciation of innovative approaches, but they need to make sense and be successful.

Thanks for your input. I figured someone with more experience would probably tell me something like this.

I'll probably do Rob's layout, but in a blank chassis so I won't have a bunch of empty holes. I'd also like to move the left side group of pots to the right, the power tube sockets closer to the PI, and the power switch and fuse to the left to cut down on those extra wire runs.

No.   That's exactly what I would do.

Also, consider using shielded cable anywhere you can do in your signal path (a la Dumble's approach). This is a pain, but does seem to help.

I've always used terminal strips surrounding the tube sockets.


Fender style parallel components on a board never.

This one was 4 channels with 2 of them being high gain, LDRs for switching.


Yes, there were some signal wires that needed rerouted, and bugs in my switching matrix, but terminal strips is the way to go.

I'm creating my own hybrid P2P layout in DIYLC anyway, just to see how good I can get it.

I'm still on the fence about it. I'd for sure use that layout when I build this amp for myself after I build it for my friend. If I do Rob's layout, it would probably be modified a bit more than my initial ideas.

We'll see how my hybrid P2P layout turns out, but I'm feeling pretty good about it so far. I'm at the PI plate section currently. I haven't worked on any power circuits yet, but I know how I'd do it.

I am curious.  How was the floor level noise?  Any issues with hum or buzz?
