Several Questions Before Building 59Bassman
« on: February 10, 2023, 12:47:37 pm »
Starting to make plans for building a 59Bassman clone. Looking for recommendations on parts.
*What is the most original sounding capacitors for bassman? I prefer orange drops in the 5E3 I have. To me it has a more bubbly sound. But maybe that is just in my head. Recommendations or doesn't matter?
*Is the Pacific Audio Magnetics better than Hammond or other brands? They claim they clone the original transformers rather than the stated specs of the transformers.
*Shielded wire- Going to really take my time on this build and don't mind adding some shielded wire into some areas. What spots should I try to use shielded wire? Grounding goes on which end? Thinking I remember that it should be upstream on the signal path?
*I think I have a copy of the "real" 59 schematic that is true to the parts actually used in famous amps rather than the published schematic. Anyone know if that really matters?
*Other recommendations?

Looks like fender reissue schematic is actually closer to the real 59 amps than the commonly used schematic.

Apparently Fender wasn't that good at quality control and also changed the design on the fly. Changed caps values and several pots to liner tapper. Makes sense for a small growing company to have this evolution.

Well the 1st thing to understand is, you want to call it a 'Tweed Bassman clone' or a '5F6A clone'. (The '59 Bassman' is a PCB-constructed reissue, so the thought of a 'clone' of that conjures up something PCB-ish. ;-) YMMV)

A bus stops at a bus station. A train stops at a train station. On my desk, I have a work station.
