Brick and mortar shops
« on: March 17, 2023, 12:06:51 am »
I'm wondering who has access to these places?
I was in Vancouver today passing through and stopped by probably the only game in town...  I had to wait for 3 people to walk out before I could get in.  I picked up a couple transformers, a 100W soldering iron, deoxit, some solder.  All the things that can't be found anywhere else.  And I was tripping over people.  There was probably 20 customers in a 1000 ft/2 area.  They had everything.
It was like the old radio shack x2.
Prices were very reasonable, (as in cheaper than online) there were probably 4 employees who were swamped.
Do these places still exist, or is this the only one?  (they do online orders as well)

Why not give the address ?

Update  !

I do mistake, ( I'm thinking of Allied Electronics ) .
Radio Shack was a very small electonic store and easy to beat in the "olds"days.

I remember there are many better electronic stores in my country. Like Addison Electronic wich is now a kind of department store

Sayal Electronics in Toronto , Canada is very good.

You-Do-It Electronics in Needham Massachusetts is one. https://www.youdoitelectronics.com/
Much better and bigger than any Radio Shack I recall. I always visit You-Do-It when driving down through Mass, its really nice to be able to browse through physical stuff. I always leave with several items, despite the fact that I am in the habit of calling it You-Blew-It Electronics.

This is not really on point but I still miss Fry's Superstores out West.  Living in California, I knew I could find literally anything I needed at Fry's.  Even when I was just visiting out there I'd always make time to cruise the nearest Fry's.  Like hitting the In 'n' Out Burger first thing out of the airport. :icon_biggrin:

I spent too much time in New Jersey. I am shocked to learn that Barracks Trading Post is still open(?), two locations(?). Original was in Maple Shade and looks unchanged (so does their website); was more about surplus parts and classic (or just old) hi-fi. One in New Brunswick which was technically not a pawn shop for band gear ("He is honest and upfront about the value of the crap you bring in"), and also speaker parts and carpets. I don't think the two have been affiliated in decades, though I did see the MS boss at the NB place around 1981?

I'd have to drive 3 hours to buy a resistor here.

I lived in a small town isolated by a ferry, so Radio Shack was literally the only place to find anything electrical.  In fact, that was their main focus.  They had bins of pots, resistors, switches, etc.  They had some other stuff, toys and gadgets, but were mainly diy electronics focused.  Then they changed to cell phones and tv's, then shortly thereafter went out of business.

The place in Vancouver is Lee's Electronics on Fraser street.  https://leeselectronic.com/en/

They don't carry much high voltage stuff, and not too economical for buying surplus for some things.  But I'll definitely be supporting them whenever I can, although like i said, they were busier than any store I've been in for years.
