three legged dog
went with a couple guys in the Navy to see Pompeii, i was straggling behind looking at something when this dog walks up, yep a 3 legged.  i scrounged in my pack, found some jerky, he sat down, gnawed on it awhile then became "my dog" for the day, wound up buying some meat on a stick to feed him, got him a bottle of water.  he just wandered off as I was leaving, pretty sure he can spot a sap a mile away  :icon_biggrin:

shooter--------I've always been intrigued with Pompeii. Other than meeting and treating you three legged friend, what did you thinkabout Pompeii?

was a long time ago in a far away place.....

soulful; is as close as my English skillset goes.  Was more a religious experience than a historical experience.  I had already read a historical account.
it goes in the same bucket as wounded knee, explaining the why gets complicated

OK, Archaeology is something I've always been interested in. Pompeii is a city and people frozen in time when it all stopped at the eruption of Mr. Vesuvius. Just to see how everything was at that point of time preserved under the lava and ash. Kind of like a time capsule. The craftsmanship of what they are finding is really outstanding for its time

a time capsule
most of the tile work images while well crafted, left me with a sense of "unease", even creepy.

I met the dog near the bakers place, I found in many places, the "live version" of Pompeii, A small village in the African Desert, a small village on Mauritius.  Things like a communal garden, a baker, a small store, restaurant, dogs wandering, kids playing ...then it would rain...

Vesuvius was closed to hikers when i was there, "un stable conditions" Did get to hike to the volcanic rim of Mauritius, looking into the volcano, having the brain start firing up Mass n Force n ... awe-struck comes to mind.

OK, thanks for explaining your take on it. I won't get into the details, but from my study on it, a lot of debauchery went on there. A Roman party town if you will

we probably studied similar material.  I'd have to hit one of Doug's "3rd rails" to explain any more.
I was 21/22 at the time, I knew then it would NOT be on my list of places to re-visit when i get old.

Shooter - now that we are in "Other Stuff" I can ask about Wounded Knee. How was your visit there? It has been on the very top of my list for a while. We had to cancel a road trip 3 years ago and now plan to head west late fall. I have read much about Wounded Knee and it is pulling at me to go there and experience whatever I will experience. Sometimes you just need to be in a place.

the short answer, I cried.
both places were "religious" experiences.

You're right, sometimes you just have to be there.  I'm a smidge Cherokee.
that trip was choked full of "experience". A young Antelope walked up within 2' of me as I was siting on a small knoll, we looked at each other a few minutes, seconds later a Golden Eagle cried out, minutes later a lone buffalo got close enough to make eye contact. hiking in the area I found a jaw bone, picked it up to look at it and a molar fell out into my hand.  there was a native "craft show' in a small town, met a native story teller, we talked for 2 hours.

I did oil painting for about 16years, after that trip my pallet colors changed to "painted rocks' colors; browns, orange, reds, grays I finished my painting career with that pallet.  this is probably one of my better works from that time period;

Thanks for sharing that Shooter. My response is the same during such visits. 4 years ago when my wife and I turned 66 we planned a road trip on Rt. 66 with many side trips Wounded Knee was one. We had to cancel. Hopefully this fall we will be ready to roll.
Your experience with the antelope is special. When we go, I will be sure to circle back to this thread.

It is said that Felix's second wife Drusilla perished along with their son in Pompeii.

I'm reclaiming that which has been claimed many times before
started as a chicken coop ~1953, became the family burn pit ~1970's, reclaimed and converted to flower garden ~1993.
clearing it for an outdoor wood stove with small patio.
as i was drinking coffee this morning, ready for more excavation, this image reminded me of the bakers home where i 1st met the 3-legged dog.
