 AB763 Turret Board layout
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone have a printable template for the Hoffman AB763 turret board that I could use to locate the proper hole spacing, etc. I'd like to print out the turret layout and just stick it to the board and drill straight through.
I think some kind of spray adhesive will work for this. I could just wash off the paper once all the turret holes were drilled. All your help is appreciated.

Everybody wants something for free!!! Doug designed it and sells the templates with the drilling jigs. Other guys have made the investment to produce these for sale. You should try by yourself with the layouts on the website and make some measurements... I hope none of you guys on this forum give him one!!

I don't think there is really any right or wrong spacing. You don't want the spacing so spread apart that the board doesn't fit in the chassis or so tight that you have a hard time mounting the components. The only spacing that really matters is for the bias pot and you can figure that out when you buy one. Just study the diagrams that Doug so kindly provides and then lay it out on graph paper. Then use the graph paper as your drilling guide. The other alternative is to buy one of Doug's drilling guides.

That's just my two cents. I do it this way and it works just fine.

Well I'll tell you, without the drilling guide and template you're gonna have a hard time getting straight hole alignment drilling a GR10/FR4 board freehand. If you don't mind the board looking crappy then you could do it by hand.
I can see why a guy wouldn't want to pay $95 to $100 for a bare board when the parts cost (board, turrets and buss wire) run about $25. If you by a long enough sheet from McMaster you'll end up with two extra board blanks (cause their sizes will be wider than 3 1/8") so the real board cost will be $25 rather than $5 which brings your total to $45. If one has the talent to do a board quickly, then it makes sense to cut the labor cost and do it yourself. So you're gonna save about $60 on the bare board labor cost.

Hopefully you have good skills and you'll be happy with the result. However, you might ask Doug if he would drill you a mask on 1/8" G10 instead of the standard 1/16" for an upcharge over the standard $25 mask cost and save yourself alot of trouble. You could use the 1/8" mask as your board. You won't find the turrets cheaper than Doug unless you buy 1,000 and he beats everyone else on the buss wire too. If you're not going to build alot of amps than I can see why you wouldn't want to buy the drilling mask.

I gotta tell you though, my first amp was a plexi 50 watt and I bought the board from one of Doug's board suppliers loaded. It might have cost a lot more, but I got two things from it. An awesome quality first time amp build, and a lesson in craftsmanship. Thanks for that Costas!

At the risk of getting beat up here, Doug hasn't had the drilling guide in stock for ages..... so how can the poor guy buy one if he wanted to.
I do what i think it was doug himself suggested some time back. I copy the picture of the layout and then size it on a graphics program. Then i tape it on the board and drill the holes. Not 100 percent exact but close enough. I've been successful for the two amps i've built. Just buy parts from doug as a courtesy for supplying the info. He also has quality parts and super super quick shipping.
I've seen many posts from Loose Change and he is usually helpful and courteous. I think maybe he fell out of the bed this morning. (ha ha) Everyone on this site is pretty cool.

 Rude Remarks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not exactly new to online forums. I've been posting regularly since 98. Wow, I didn't realize this was the amature hour. I just thought it was a cool hobby on the side of my real profession. You people have no idea who you are talking to. Would you be so rude to my face?

I'm second on the left and the crew chief on that particular tour. This is what I do, you guys have fun in your living rooms. I won't bother with this place again.

 Harry,
tk74 gave you the right advice. I would just print it and resize it until you get it to fit on your board. It seems harder than it really is the first time you do it. With that said Barry is also right, without the mask sometimes the holes are not exactly lined up which is OK for a hobby. Barry sells his stuff so he wants it to look perfect. I have done my stuff without the drilling template and it works fine.
There really isn't a wrong or right. It just depends on how much stuff and how much room you have.
Here is a picture of a matchless lightning board I did. If you look closely the rows are not perfect but it still looks good and the amp works like a charm!

I did the layout on graph paper. I had to re-draw and move components 3 or 4 times to get it to fit on the board. The size of the board was driven because of the size of hte hammond chassis that I was using for the amp. For me this is half of the fun making these type of decisions.

 Harry,
turn the other cheek is still sage advice even more than 2,000 years later.
If you are truly interested in building quality tube amps, not bothering with this place only shoots yourself in the foot. In here, it doesn't matter what you do for your day job (a heart surgeon might still be a tube newbie), all that matters is sharing knowledge with each other and being civil. I myself have made an aggravated reply or two which I regret, so, my advice is don't do it.

Loose change (who has helped many in this forum) was just showing the tenacious protective loyalty which most of us share for Doug Hoffman who has given so much knowledge and assistance to us all via this forum when we were newbies. Doug makes his living selling parts to the Tube community so giving things away (besides his knowledge) is not in his best interest financially.

Hang in there, be nice, and ask all the questions you want. You will be surprised how much you can learn. Don't forget that this forum is full of human beings.
Barry

 Harry,
Don't leave our forum. We all like to help! (Sorry about opening a can of worms)
I am a designer by trade. The Internet has cost me copyrighted material. Just like the guys who can't make a living because their music was downloaded for free. I just like to see people with good ideas and creativity to be able to keep it going, like the board manufacturers on this site.
Take NO offense... please.
Anyway, who are you?

This place is usually very civil. More often than not even humorous. I would hate to see that change.

I think the key is to not take anything personal. If you don't like someones comments then just don't read them. There are plenty of people who will give the right answer.

And you are right Harry, people would post something on the internet that they probably wouldn't say to your face.

Harry, who have you worked with now that you let the cat out of the bag?
