Raw pot in 5F4 super
« on: September 25, 2023, 01:08:29 pm »
Good afternoon, I am planning a 5F4 Super build and wanted your advice on installing a "raw" pot. I just finished a Princeton build where this group helped me add a raw pot that works exceptionally well. In the Princeton's case, the raw pot replaced the "mid" pot. The 5F4 Super does not have a mid pot, but does have a presence - I could add a pot as well.

I attached a Super layout I'm thinking of following - it is quite close to the original except for the tone stack, bias and rectifier wiring. Please let me know what you think and thanks!!

The 5F4 has odd tone controls. I don't see any way to add a raw pot. You could use a 3PST switch to switch the entire tone circuit out. But then your "raw" would just either be on or off, not variable.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Yes. But looks-like both knobs on "5" is like "raw", both on "10" is like "Fender scoop". Not as convenient as a raw knob but considering what a mess the 5F4 tone network is.......

I would build it stock. The super I built didn’t need that raw control. The response of the treble pot on the last 25% of the dial is really amazing! I did add a LarMar PPIMV to get OD at decent levels and that worked like a charm.

Thanks again for the opinion - really appreciate the ideas and help!

For reference, I put the original 5F4 Fender Super layout and the CeriaTone schematic (from earlier) in the same file attached below. The original Super design is certainly more simple - and I recognize the value of keeping the project more original. I did want to clarify if, in your opinion, the original Fender tone stack was a mess too or only the CeriaTone layout version I posted earlier?

Sorry if this is confusing. I'm now leaning toward keeping the project true to the original design.

Sorry, I could only fit the original layout - here's the attachment!

That Ceriatone drawing is a layout and it's probably based on the real Fender SCHEMATIC. A layout ain't worth Jack Shit for answering your "raw pot" question.

You need to look at (and understand) a schematic to realize that a raw pot ain't gonna work in this oddball amp.

BTW, I have never seen a Ceriatone schematic.

Neither have I and I have read that they do not include them even if you buy a kit - just the layout.
Regardless - My second scratch build, after a 5C3, was a 5F4 Super. I did not know enough to know it was weird, just built it following the schematic and a Weber layout. I think its a great amp and agree that no raw control is needed. It's a lot louder than I need, but there is some magic in what that amp wrings out of a pair of 6L6s.

Rory Gallagher played the bassman verson, 5E6 or 5E6a, 4x10. Killer amp series.

That 5F4 is very close to the older 5E x amps.

Make C4 in the TSC schema in PRR response above switchable from 5nF to 250pF.
