Radial caps on their side?
« on: November 03, 2023, 07:48:22 pm »
Has anyone created any radial capacitor components that are laying on their side? I'd like to play around with a layout that uses nichicon or panasonic radial caps laying on their side, similar to what Lyle from PsionicAudio did on the board in this video:

You bet.   It's called dealer's choice as to how you orient them.  I mostly leave the smaller ones sticking up in the air, but do lay the taller (or heavy) ones down.

Radial caps are far more readily available now than axial caps; they are usually smaller, with better specs, far more choices available, and cheaper than their axial counterparts.  (Of course there will always be exceptions to that!).

To be honest, they are easier for me to use in my builds . . .  but I'm quirky about caps, using large film caps in my power supply when possible.

I believe he is asking about how to do this in DIYLC?
Go to Passive - Electrolytic caps (Radial) - Folded Cap

The cap is drawn with the leads sticking out both sides
Grab a lead and pull it so they are flush with the body
The cap leads become sticky dots
Then add two wires to the cap dots and color them red and black if you want color coding on the wires

Then select the whole cap
Right click and save it as a building block
Now it is in the building block menu
You can click on it and add it to any of your DIYLC drawings

You can make and save different versions and save them as building blocks

The folded cap is shown at the top of this image before I shrank the leads down to dots

You can modify the caps to the shape you want before saving them as a building block
Then name the different shapes/sizes however you want

Didn't see this thread at the time.

I have been substituting radials for a while now, as space allows & have kind of landed on a regular configuration.

The negative-side of the caps connect to a row of buss-wire laced turrets as a ground buss & the positive leads pass over that buss & connect to individual turrets which allows node wires to be connected, as well as dropping resistors connected between those turrets.

Then I goop the caps down when they are installed.

Kind of a mouthful, easier to see from the pics.

I am running v4.37.0, but when I go to radial caps the Folded Cap option is not there.  It just shows 'no variant'.  What am I doing wrong?

I got it figured out.  I imported HoffmanBuildingBlocks.xml and HoffmanVariants.xml and it's there now.  Thanks for the great libraries!!

Sorry, I forgot to add Radial to my post above
Folded caps are here

As was previously mentioned, I also do not have folded caps (a feature I could use).
Am running DIYL 4.37.0

I don't know why?
Go to the official DIYLC site here and ask

I also don't see folded caps when adding a component to a board.  Following Bancika's GitHub advice  --

Add a radial electrolytic cap to the board.
Then "edit" the cap.   There is a small checkbox for "folded."

It works.  You can probably save it as a favorite, but I haven't done that yet.

Try this
I exported my electrolytic caps as variants and attached them here in a .zip file

Go to File - Integration - Imports variants

Import the hoffm.xml file
Note that it may double any existing variants if you already have some of them

Let me know if you then have the Folded caps in the menu

That works in MacOS.   I will try it in Windows later.

Edit:   Confirmed the procedure works in Windows 11.
