Soldano SLO 50W clone questions
« on: December 15, 2023, 11:40:57 am »
Hi guys, last build is basically over so I started to think about next step and I decided to build something based loosely on Soldano SLO but I’ve got few question at this step:)
1. Originally Soldano used o’netics output trafo with 2,2k, i started to look out what is available and on market and hmmm… it looks like it won’t be easy. The only one I found in Europe which is designed for slo 50w clone is inmadout from Italy but I heard that it is not the best choice. I found Hammond 1760L with 4.2k impedance which looks quite nice but maybe You can recommend something. Additionally I will be in US (el paso) in February and maybe I will be able to order something there and take back to Europe :)
2. In schematic there is choke 10H/200mA which looks like overkill as plate supply for power tubes is taken before choke, and choke is filtering only screen for power tubes and preamp or maybe I missing something.
Thanks guys for help in advance :)

Did you look at the tube-town website (https://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/en/tt-slo50-soldano-slo-50-watt-outputtransformer.html)? They are in Europe.

They offer an OT for the SLO50 under their house brand.
Or is that the one you are referring to (Edit: I just looked at the specs of both and they seem to be different)?

I have their 18 Watt OT in two of my amps and the quality seems to be very good.

Ciao

The problem with Savino Luce (InMadOut) isn't about the quality of transformers, as far as I can know the problem is that guys that tried to contact him weren't able to have feedback from him

A friend has a contact with a very clever transformers builder but I don't know which can be the prices he apply because my friend got only custom made transformers from him

When referencing a document surely it’s a good idea to include a link etc to it?

Contact Rob Reeder of C3 Amps, which is located in Texas. I built one of their SLO-Clone 50-watt kits a couple of years ago.

Last I remember, Rob is very busy with his regular job. Please be patient for an email response from him.

Thanks guys for reply!
Regarding schematic
I’m referring to basically all slo schematic I saw when this choke is specified:
1. https://robrobinette.com/images/Guitar/Soldano/Annotated_Soldano_SLO-100_Schematic_with_Signal_Path.png
2. http://diy-fever.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/SLOCLONE-OFFICIAL-SCHEM.pdf

The biggest load here will be power tubes screens (but it will be hmm… up to maybe 20-30mA peak per tube so with 2 tubes of peak current will not exceed 60-70mA) cranked maximum. So Even 150mA rating dc current (not max) looks like overkill to me:)

2. Regarding inmadout I heard that slo tone with this OT is a little harsh with higher amount of treble than original.

3. I will try to contact Rob Reeder :) maybe I will be able to buy something directly from him

Thanks!

With 6L6 family beam pentodes, yes.
But a lot of the user base will want to try EL34 in there. They’re going to draw a lot more g2 current when overdriven, especially with that super stiff HT supply.

Ok true! But for 50W version 100mA will more than enough especially for 6L6 :)
One more question have someone know someone who used any Hammond trafo in slo clone?

Yes it is overkill. But in most electronics chokes are out of fashion. Selection and stock is limited. Maybe that was the best part Michael could be sure of getting at good quality.

Also there are some amp buyers who go by size and weight. "WOW! Look at the iron in there! Must be better than a Fender!"

Yeap, I will probably go with 12H 100mA Hammond 193B or even 158M 10H/100mA  in this design but from purely aesthetic point of view I would like to have caps :)
