Placement of Choke inside of chassis rather than outside
« on: March 13, 2024, 10:39:17 am »
I have a L20H Laney Lionheart head and a L5T 12" combo Cabinet. I was hoping to squeeze on the the head chassis in the the L5T making a combo. This would mean moving the Choke from the outside of the chassis to the inside. Left on the outside it would foul the speaker which has little scope to be moved.
Is this safe, advisable.  There is plenty of clearance inside but wondering whether it might induce noise or heat..although I would not think the choke would get hot.

That's fine. Here are  two examples. The first is a Sunn Sceptre. (BTW, Sunn put all their chokes inside.) The second is a Hammond AO-63 with two chokes inside.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Dynaco also put their PSU chokes inside of their chassis. Among other things, this saved a little money as they didn't need to put endbells on the choke.

That's most likely where Sunn got the idea, since their first amp was an actual Dynaco Mark III power amp and a modified Dynaco preamp.

Sometimes rotating the speaker is also an option. By lining up the cutout in the speaker frame with a corner of the choke you might buy an extra inch of clearance. Sorry for the post if you already considered that possibility ;-)

Thanks for the suggestion. I have also replaced the speaker with a Greenback which is slightly shallower to improve the clearances between speaker and power tubs. I have made the change and think I'm good to go. Will share some photo's.
