MOSFET effects loop return gate to ground resistor position
« on: March 18, 2024, 06:36:15 am »
Hello everyone,
I'd like to add an effects loop to an amp I'm (slowly) building at the moment. For the recovery stage, I want to use an LND150 MOSFET with local negative feedback to reduce gain and increase headroom. A rough schematic is attached.
I have doubt about the location of the 'gate-leak' resistor, however. In Merlin's guitar preamp book (2nd edition), in the section about triodes with local NFB (10.3), he states some grid-leak is also required and in the figure there, which I pretty much adapted to the LND150, a grid-leak resistor is tied between ground and an equivalent of R2 in my schematic.
In another LND150 effects loop schematic (Metropoulos), the gate-leak resistor is absent which makes me a tad bit confused.
So, I put it on the input side of the stage's coupling capacitor, but I'm not sure if it's correct.
Good night, Frau Blücher.

There is some excellent information in ARCHIVES about FX Loops using either tubes or mosfets here:

Thanks for the reply, tubenit.
I am familiar with the thread you've linked. I've read it a few times already
Unfortunately, it doesn't really answer my question. The Metropoulos loop uses local NFB at the SEND stage and there the gate-leak resistor is conspicuous by its absence. At least in the form I'm familiar with. :dontknow:
Their return stage is a regular LND150 gain stage. I've tried that configuration and wasn't particularly pleased with the results, hence my attempt at local NFB here.
The TT loop does employ local NFB around the RETURN stage. The feedback loop, however, encompasses an RC network which I believe 2deaf referred to as a 'design flaw'. Not sure though.
I'd just like to know which side of the input cap the ground reference resistor should be on. If it matters at all.
 :dontknow:

Is my thinking correct that the gate IS actually referenced to ground by the feedback resistor and the volume pot arrangement after the output cap?  :w2:
Is that enough?
Good night, Frau Blücher.

You have a gridleak path grid to ground. You don't see it?

The resistor on the far side of the cap does the grid no good.

If you need to lower gain, use a resistor under the FET instead of a diode.

Hello, PRR,

You have a gridleak path grid to ground. You don't see it?

I did! I did! I taw a putty tat!  :icon_biggrin:
But because I'm not an electronics engineer (or anything even close, for that matter), I simply wasn't sure. You know what it's like, when you're a layman, you miss certain things.
Thanks a million for making that clear  :worthy1:

As for the resistor instead of a diode, do you mean 'resistor instead of diode plus NFB'?
Good night, Frau Blücher.
