Hoffman PR with Raw Control
« on: March 28, 2024, 03:07:32 pm »
I guess I am just never satisfied with good enough.  I was thinking of adding a Raw Control to my Hoffman Princeton Reverb. The goal is to provide a little more break up at an earlier volume level by removing or limiting the tone stack.  I have an Allen Chihuahua with the raw control on a switch that does just this.

I have attached 2 pics that I think might work.  One with just a raw control the other using a 10k pot to replace the 6.8K resistor.

Will this work for my intended purpose.

Thanks for the input
Rusty

The Raw control alone (without a resistor) will work fine.  Adding the resistor just means you cannot get "less than stock" Mids.

You can add the Mid control along with the Raw control, but it's unnecessary complication that I suspect won't actually get used (after the first day or 2).

You already know the Raw control will increase mids and gain.  However, it won't be any quieter at the onset of distortion (even though distortion will occur at a lower Volume knob number).  That's because the output tubes are still the first thing to distort, and they will be delivering the same power at the onset of distortion.

If you use a 10% log taper 100k pot you'll have greater control over the stock sounds for the first half is the rotation.  However, the difference at the "raw" end of the pot between 100k and 250k is substantial ~3dB.  So perhaps a 250k audio pot is worth considering if you're ok with not having fine control over the stock range.

If you have two inputs you can remove the #2 input, go with 34K grid stopper, and mount a mini pot in that input hole.
