Screen tap on Transformer?
« on: May 03, 2024, 06:59:56 pm »
I am looking at some toroidal output transformers, and some of them have screen taps.  What is that?

That is a ultralinear transformer.
Theory is when everyone knows everything but nothing works, practice is when stuff works but nobody knows why !!!

Screen taps are for ultralinear (UL) amps. Mostly hifi stuff. There are a few guitar amps that are UL. Usually clean sounding amps. I have two UL amps...

You can ignore the screen taps and just insulate the ends of the leads.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thanks!  I'm not actually planing on using it, I was just looking at it and hadn't seen it before.  I figure I should use up the transformers I have in the house before I buy anything more, particularly since they work for the amp I am thinking of building.
