Speaker options for 2x10 cab and other questions...
« on: December 23, 2024, 02:30:35 pm »
Here's my situation:

I have several heads that only have 8 ohm taps.
I have a dual-mono head that has two 4 ohm taps.
I have a 2x10 cabinet.

I would like to be able to plug those 8 ohm heads into this cab, as well as the 4ohm dual-mono head.

I've been looking for 4ohm 10" speakers but they are few and far between.

I understand I will need to add a switch for the cab so its either one 8 ohm input for both speakers, or to switch to two separate inputs for my dual-mono 4 ohm head.

Any input from you experts would be great, especially regarding 10" 4 ohm speakers (There's the Jensen P10R that I like (I don't really like the MOD series) and also V.O.R. (voice of rock)) but I haven't seen much else.

I'm guessing my only other option would be to use a speaker spacer / additional baffle that accommodates 8" speakers.

Appreciate your input!

I have used this device:  https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/jack-plate-plug-and-play-mono-stereo, which works fine.   If you look around on the page, you can find the schematic to clone your own version.

It mightn't do exactly what you want, but it does give options.

Believe it or not these aren't bad at all.  https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Mod10-50-4--jensen-mod-10-50-10-inch-50-watt-replacement-speaker-4ohm  the Jensen alnicos are also available in 4Ω.
I don't know where you are looking but Jensens, Webers, Warehouse Guitar, and others all offer 10" 4Ω options.

hey acheld and mresistor,  thanks a lot for the input!!

mresistor:  i honestly haven't liked the MOD series in the shootouts I've heard (btw, i'm hoping to put two different speakers in there, like a Jensen and a Celstion).  I will keep checking on the Jensen alnicos (I love that vintage alnico).

acheld:  that device, although bitchin', seems to do the opposite of what i need.  (stereo 8ohms and mono 4 ohm).

what would be perfect is:

one mono input for the 8ohm head, and two mono ins for the dual-mono 4ohm head.  am I misunderstanding what this thing does?  killer unit for sure and great price!

I think it does exactly what you want.  Go to the website page and look at the "Plugin Schematic."   You'll see that the "16ohm" mono input is simply the two speakers in series (bottom of the schematic page). And the "stereo" (third from the bottom) configuration shows how they have isolated the 4ohm speakers.

You do not need to plug in both speakers; you could use one 4ohm speaker at a time.

Now why they published the schematic for this, I don't know -- cuz you can clone this easily if you want.

I purchased one, and it worked great until one of the jacks failed.   So I got some high quality jacks, and wired them up with the schematic -- has now worked flawlessly for years.  You'd need Switchcraft 14B jacks for this, IIRC.

I will say that the jack plate itself is worth the $25!  Just relabel with your actual ohms . . .

hey fellas, thanks for the replies (and happy friggin new year!)

acheld, so you're saying it's exactly what i need "IF" i use 4 ohm speakers instead of 8 ohm?

then the 16 mono input would now be 8 mono, and the two 8 ohm 'stereo' jacks would then be two 4 ohm jacks.

am I following you correctly?

thanks scstill for the links!
