L7805 tab for LV ground?
« on: February 12, 2025, 11:44:30 pm »
I'm using an L7805 for some digital switching logic, and I'm thinking of just using the regulator tab (which is GND) as the chassis reference for the entire switching system (one PIC micro, and few buffers, a bunch of BJT's driving signals, and a few relays).  Good idea?  Bad idea?

"free-standing"?, heats not gonna be your friend if so, the ground should work.
Went Class C for efficiency

I mean, it's gonna be bolted to the chassis, so should have at least some degree of heat dissipation.  The Micro is pretty low power, and the relays aren't particularly power hungry.  I don't really have room to put on one of those Boogie style heat sinks, but I'd be surprised if there was all that much heat being made.  It's not dropping all that much voltage.
