Choke placement and orientation
« on: April 29, 2025, 05:38:30 pm »
I was hoping to get some advice on where I should place the chokes in my amp build, at least to start. I'm working on a Model T clone and I have the option of placing them either inside (like the original model T) or outside the chassis (somewhere around the power transformer either way).

I have included some pictures of what I have to work with. The only things that are mounted are the transformers (used the headphone trick to where there was least noise) and the tube sockets. The turret boards are not mounted yet. I'm getting close to having enough of the wiring done to test the power amp and output section and I just wanted to ask people with more experience if there is a better position on where to start with placing them.

Thank you.

Choke outside would be my preference

relative to the other transformers,
where on the outside would locate the choke?
and how would you orient the choke?

The choke is a source of magnetic hum. A fairly small source, sure, but still a source. Therefore it can go right next to the PT since it doesn't really matter if the choke receives hum, it's more important to keep it as far from audio stuff as practical.

I did something like your mounting suggestion in Phirty6

That is the choke sitting on top of the PT with the OT in the corner
Very tight space, sounds great, even bigger through an external cab

Thank you very much for the advice. I'll start outside and find a spot near the PT where hum is minimized.
