Usable "extra" tap on Silvertone 1482 OT?
« on: May 28, 2025, 01:47:34 pm »
Hey guys! It's been quite a while. Had to park much of my amp building and tweaking as of late. But a recent find for a friend has revived the festivities. A buddy of mine was recently given an old Silvertone guitar and 1482 model amp from his Uncle. Been in an old farm barn for decades. Got her cleaned up last night. She's quite well kept. But for those who know the amp, she leaves much it to be desired. It's a thing though.

Added a three prong power chord and cut out the death cap last night. Will get going on the other usual fun of measuring and replacing necessary caps and components. I did move the OT leads from the speaker to an external jack for external cab use. The stock speaker measured 5 ohms (I assuming its an 8ohm, though that's the lowest reading I've ever seen). But I noticed the OT has an extra tap. Seen on the schematic as well.

Assuming the stock secondary tap that was used is in fact for an 8 ohm speaker....Am I correct to assume that the unused tap on the secondary winding would be usable with 16 ohm?  (Bottom wire being common, middle connection 8 ohm, top connection 16 ohm?) That would allow different cab options with either two jacks (shared common) or a jack on a switch?

On a stock UN-tampered with 1482 the OT in use is a 4 Ohm tap. The other unused tap is a 8 Ohm. I've got two 1482's. One completely stock and the other modded out. So on the modded one I have a Eminence Cannabis Rex connected to the 8 Ohm tap.

Attached is the schematic that's in the 1482 users manual. It shows 3.2 Ohms. I assume VC stands for voice coil.So less or more Ohms on the speaker match is pretty common. So a mis-match of an ohm or two is not a big deal.

Welcome back, Platefire

Thanks, Platefire! I’ve definitely read a few of your threads the last couple days. Will have to message you and pick your brain on a few things.

I see that manual only has a single tap pictured. I’d guess it’s probably still the same OT model and just more likely they just simplified the schematic.
