Recommendations for guitar speakers
« on: June 20, 2025, 06:04:59 pm »
hey all,

I know this stuff can be subjective, but I was hoping to hear from some of you pros.

I have a 2x10 cab.  I'd like to put two different 'color' speakers in it.  My primary amp is a DIY 5F2A Princeton which is biased to break up pretty nicely.

I usually like a standard 'rock' vibe, but also dig the texas/blues sounds.  Nothing too pristine and chimey, I like my breakup!

Is there a chance I can find a really good 'rock' and a 'texas blues' 8ohm 10" for around (or under!) $200 total?

Would love your recommendations on that, and also where best to find them online.

Cheers!

I like the Eminence Legend 10" that's in my '78 Princeton Reverb.  I don't really have a clue what you'd want to pair it with.   Maybe an alnico 10.  Weber also makes great speakers.

I paired my legend with a Celestin cream-back in a 2 X 12 cab

i'm a tone-def tech

i had maybe 8-10 speakers available from my pile, others i borrowed, rolled them all through with spreadsheet n comments, when I "hit" the magic combination, my ears went, wow, I sound good playing, that's a 1st, so i pitched the paperwork, never looked back!!!

speakers are 40% of an amps "sound", the guitarist another 48%, the guitar, amp, pedals make up the rest.

Emi Texas Heat is a 150W rated speaker..  not what you'd consider a good break up speaker.  It only comes in 12"  have you looked at some of the Emi GA 10" speakers?

The speakers should have the same impedance.  I suggest also to keep SPL & wattage in mind.  SPL:  if one speaker is more efficient it might drown out its mate.  Wattage:  You don't need more than 10W total for that amp.  Higher wattage speakers will function, but probably sound "strident".

Excellent input, you guys.  Thanks a lot.  My guitarist buddy is coming over next week with a few speakers to do a little shoot out!
