Any of y'all messed with Linux?
« on: December 09, 2025, 02:27:07 am »
The shop computer is too old for 11 so I'm giving Mint a go.
Takes a good bit of fiddling around but I've been able to get a few things to run.
Jschem was a bit of fun! Had to go into the download and unlock the permissions! WTF!
Java to run it was a hoot too!

If y'all got any advice on the how too's of Linux, I'd be grateful!

Running Mint Cinnamon. For now at least! LOL!

Thanks!

I just got rid of my old W10 dust sucking under the desktops and went with Beelink mini computers

I have two of these for business and the house
The business one is running 3 printers and 3 monitors

I have one of these really tiny ones for a CNC machine running Mach3
You don't need much power to run Mach3 and that's all that is installed
https://a.co/d/5sUGwUy

All of them come with W11 pro

So far they have been awesome, take up a tiny bit of desk space, have zero fan noise and use hardly any power

I still have one W10 music recording PC that does not need to be changed
And one Windows XP CNC machine that is fine

I also have a couple notebooks and laptops that don't need changing

Thanks Doug, I'll look into that.

I have one box on 11 Pro.
My daughter's boyfriend told me about this program (OOSU10). (it's FREE)
It disables all the BS Bloat like Copilot, Edge, etc. You do have to
check it after "updates" though as "they" like to turn your stuff back on.

I tell ya, getting rid of those big box, dust sucking, noisy fan desktops has been awesome

I had to take them outside and use a leaf blower or compressed air to blow them out every now and then
I don't miss any of that
W11 is ok if you use one of those bloat removers that change privacy settings and delete crap

But my mini's did not really come with any bloat ware

Those Beelink micro's are great.   When I first saw a Nuc 5 years ago, I said no way, I won't be caught dead with one of those . . .

But my brother gave me a used HP mini a couple of years ago, and it was fantastic.  No way will I go back to the fire-breathing, loud and heavy monsters I used to build.

Now, even my latest Mac Mini is is the size of a Beelink and it beats anything I've ever had.

I was very surprised at the first one I got
I opened it up and had a look

The quality is awesome on the 3 Beelinks I have.
I contacted customer service with a question and they got back to me the same day.

The processor is not ripping fast but it is Ryzen 7
I am not playing games or doing stuff that requires a monster CPU or GPU

But you can buy them to do that sort of thing if you want to pay more.

bastards!!!

I hacked up my Win7 enough "they" hated me enough that my SW was deemed "NON authorized version" even though I held the "Official License"

made me feel all warm fuzzy inside!
 :icon_biggrin:
from what i've read WIN 11 considers EVERYTHING on your system "theirs", your personal files are owned by you but "they" have full access AND can use your content without permissions.
Went Class C for efficiency

Never seen that?

I watch a couple Windows tech channels and have not seen any info about MS using anything on my systems.
They would be the first ones to sound that alarm
