Buying a DMM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After finishing my first scratch build, I feel the need to build another. Is the the beginning of a serious addiction? Anyway, I'd like to take the plunge and buy a good quality digital multimeter. I've always heard that FLUKE is THE name in DMMs. Can anyone suggest some good FLUKE models or any other quality brands? I realize these things don't come cheap, but I would like to get a good one that won't leave me broke.

i would agree that the flukes are really nice having used only one before. i have a very nice extech model that i don't use much, i seem to always use my plain old sears craftsman that only cost $29 and includes capacitance measuring. its a great all around little meter that has auto ranging as well and won't break the bank @ $29. but by all means if you can aford a fluke they are great and will last a lifetime

I have a fluke 112 and it does just about everything that I need. I think there is a 110 that does everything that the 112 does but doesn't have the backlit LCD.

I previously had a craftman without capacitance. I probably wouldn't have bought another if it had it. The only issue that I ever had was that the dial stop clicking. It wouldn't really lock into a setting. I have heard that this happens on the craftsman DMM. They would probably replace it but I never bothered because it worked fine and didn't really matter that much.
I think I remember Doug saying he used a radio shack because he could get the insurance and just trade it in for a new one if he fried it.
