 68 Princeton cap job (AA964)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today I was given an alternative for replacing the cap can in a Princeton. I'm just getting into the amp thing, so I thought a safe place to start is tuning up my recently acquired Princeton. A repair guy told me that the can containing the 3(?) caps would cost about $60, but I could buy 3 separate caps, for much cheaper, and mount them on turrets over the area where the can is. I noticed Hoffman has some cap cans, but not the one I was looking for(I don't think). I'm just wondering what route to go. If I do the route of mounting 3 caps in the chassis, I would need a schematic/layout of how to do it. If the cans can be obtained and for a reasonable price, then I'd rather go that route to keep the amp as stock as possible. Any help is appreciated.

I never noticed that before. Hoffman does not have a 3 section cap for Fenders... What to do, what to do (Doug?) ??

I would get the 3 separate caps and put them into the amp.

You can leave the original can in place for appearances and add separate caps underneath. The can grounds can remain connected but cut loose the other wires and resistors. Add a terminal strip for the new parts. 47uF and 22uF /450V caps are available from several places and the smaller radial-lead caps usually fit in better. Order some new resistors too. And fix the AC wiring with a 3-wire grounded cord.

You can get the exact replacement for your Princeton at Virbroworld.

www.vibroworld.com/parts/....html#cans

Zack makes the cans there and they work great. The only hard part is melting the solder to remove the old can. I used two 100W irons to do this. Single caps will work fine, but I'll get a bit crowded in the chassis.

Doug stocks the cans used in most amps, but the BF Princeton isn't one of them.
