 I finished my first build a couple months ago, a tweed deluxe 5E3. I'm finally building a cabinet for it. I've copied tweed deluxe cabinet dimensions and used good quality pine. I've used dovetail joints and have a Jensen alnico reissue 12" speaker.

My questions are, is there much difference in sound between naked wood, tweed, and tolex.

I've never applied tweed or tolex, where is a good source to purchase and directions to install. Also what is good to use for the speaker baffle.

 Use 1/2" BIRCH ply for your baffle, anything you put on the cab will somewhat restrict it's resonance. I like waterborne neoprene contact cement to apply tolex, tweed is a bit tougher to work with than tolex but the sound difference is nill. Be prepared to screw it up the first time unless you have upholstery experience

 Hey Mojogroff

The info CASEY4's has is good. He taught me how to build
my cabs and install tolex/tweed. You can do a good first time
tolex job but you have to take your time and work out each
detail as you go along. The 90 degree inside and outside corners are hardest to learn but you can work your way through them fine with a little instructions and studying the each trimming situation as you go along. Plate

 Also if you don't have a real example to study at home go to a local music shop and take a look at the fender re-issue blackface and tweed amps. Take note of how they did the corners and which direction the cuts in the material go. Also look at the overlapping of materials on straight seems. Helped me a lot

 Thanks for the answers to my question. I've ordered a gallon of waterbased contact cement.

Does anyone know of a cheap material to practice with, that is similar to tolex. I'm nervous about messing up expensive tolex, or butchering my beautiful cabinet.

 you can buy naugahyde without fluffy backing. Also, Tolex is actually manufactured for Vinyl tops on cars, It is sometimes called levant. Places selling it for cars are usually 1/2 the price as places selling it for MI applications

 1 more question on cabinets. How important is it to shield the inside of the cabinet? What is good to use?

 VERY IMPORTANT, It helps keep those nasty radio frequencies out of your amp. I use Tin tape for duct work with good results, you can also use elmers glue and broiler foil. Stainless steel window screen and a couple of staples is another option. Make sure that the shielding touches the chassis. If you want to you can use the copper screen that radio designers build their cages out of, it's a bit pricey though.

 Thanks Funkman...We're about ready to rock, I'll try to get pictures cause this thing really turned out nice..red fender snakeskin tolex with vox grillcloth, gold hardware and a marshall handle.
