Moderator Exposes?

Call me crazy, but I'm curious to learn more about the mods here on the board.  Maybe we can come up with a few open ended questions to ask and you guys could answer them for us.  I'd like to learn about your histories and what led you into your current situations.  Anyone game?

I used to be a moderator but the pressure was so intense that finally I cracked.

I live in an asylum now, and my bank accounts have been seized.

Well the pressure being a moderator is pretty over the top ........... &  if it weren't for the company Lexus that Doug gave me, the paid Hoffman Carribean vacations, matching 401k, early retirement, etc.. ....... I don't know if I could keep it up much longer.

I had common sense and really good coping skills til the 476 volts zapped me a couple of yrs ago .......... about the time I became a moderator ........... hmmm??!!

GroundhogKen, great to see a post from you.  Happy New Year.

I thought Tubenit might have cut your brakeline or something to take your place as a moderator to get all those hoffman perks.

OK, the truth (more or less) here..............

I am a professional counselor by career and do individual, marital and family counseling (for 19 yrs) plus trainings, CISD stuff ......... etc. Love what I do and have heard & witnessed many interesting stories of people's lives. Fun profession.

I have NO formal training ever regarding electronics. I'm 58 yrs old and have always loved music. Was listening to WNOE out of New Orleans in '59 and got hooked on music.   Got into building guitars about 25 yrs ago cause I couldn't afford what I really wanted but figured out I could build it. Got to see Hendrix and many of the blues greats before they were gone.

Got into amp building about 5 yrs ago strictly as a hobby and stumbled on to this forum. I could not even read a schematic and had no clue what a capacitor was or did. Started reading everything I could get my hands on and getting on the forum every day.

HotBluePlates was in Charlotte and began coming over to jam and teach me about amps. Now I know slightly more than nothing and can build good sounding amps, IMO. Worked on or built about 14 builds at this point. Not many compared to the other guys.

Met Sluckey too who is a great guy and good player. Feel like I made a friend there. Always wanted to meet DaGeezer in person and hope someday that will happen. I consider Geezer my correspondance friend.  Always been very impressed with EL34 and what he has put together here and enjoyed his common sense and warped sense of humor plus his guitar playing (ALOT). Got to meet him once and it was a real honor! Would love to meet PRR too and bet he's an odd duck, really interesting and brilliant.

................ and that's my story and I'm sticking to it. NEXT ........ !

I became the moderator for "Live Girls in Leotards" because I have this thing for, well you know.  And ever since I was a little kid and saw them in the store, well you know.  I figured the best way to experience the true experience would be to wear them under my clothes and it feels really, well you know.  I have diferent colors for every day of the week to match my moods because, well you know.  I even play my keyboards while wearing my special ones because it makes me feel pretty and, well you know.

I therefore think that I alone am perfectly qualified to hold this position.

ps I am glad you asked this question so I could come out of the, well you know.  I am glad we have such an open forum here on....ooops

> learn more about the mods here on the board.

Moderator is mostly menial work. Combination busboy and bouncer. The ideal Moderator has no opinion, just enough jargon to know what's going on, but has a strong desire to see things run smoothly.

Unfortunately it is hard to find such people. Being non-expert and low-opinion, they tend to read more than write, and leave a low profile. And no online forum moderator has been "paid" since 1997.

tubenit is an exceptional find. Training, experience, and interest in relationships, with plenty of interest in amps to hang around, and to know when a conversation is derailing. And enough moxie to speak-up when needed.

I'm here 99% as "participant" and only 1% as "moderator" (and I been slack about that 1%).

As in many situations, if you get seen too much, you get stuck with the dirty-work.

There are a LOT of non-Moderators who make this place so interesting.

But if you are going to pry.... I been playing with computers and audio since the 1960s, on the ARPAnet in 1973 but more audio into the mid-80s. Got a job fixing recordplayers for a university music department and kept it. Active in online forums nightly since around 1990. Was head sysop at CompuServe's PCHW Forum for many years, got the shirt AND the hat, but resigned/fired over disagreement with AOL stupid policy.

> bet he's an odd duck

I have odd reasons to keep my private life private. But I'm really a dull guy. House in the suburbs, Japanese sedan, denim work-shirt, nose in a book (or monitor).

PRR,  thanks for sharing a bit about who you are.   What you contribute to the forum in knowledge and perspective is outstanding!  I read just about every one of your posts hoping to glean some additional understanding from it. I think you set the standard for really knowing electronics and amps for the rest of us to aspire to.

You will never convince me you're "dull". You excel as a scientist, historian, philosopher & humorist. Sort of a modern Ben Franklin of the Hoffman forum. I think as a participant you even moderate in regards that it continues to set a direction and tone for others to emulate. And your opinions have substance in science and facts. Thanks for all you do. It's an honor have you in the Hoffman community & to learn from you.

I think the whole culture & social structure of this forum is intriguing. I don't know too many communities that maintain this much good will and generousity and remain self regulating for the good.

With respect, Tubenit

+1 on the PRR Kudo's... I like they way you break things down so that even a troll like myself can understand it (Ok lets be real, I understand maybe 20% of what your talking about, but thats 20% more than I did two years ago or so when I started lurking on this site). Your breadth of knowledge astonishes me, what you don't know ain't worth knowing and your humor makes me shoot soda out of my nose a good portion of the time. Thanks to all the others as well, Tubenit has been very kind to me, sent me quite a few layouts, disks of information and music and continuing support for projects I've got going. There's just to many to say thanks to here, but I'll say if your a moderator, you know more than a bit about tube amps on this site.

Regards,

Dyna

>I'm here 99% as "participant" and only 1% as "moderator" (and I been slack about that 1%).

I think what makes this forum click is moderation by example.  There is an abundance of willingness to help everyone, and never any dissing.  I've seen threads that start out as, "My AB763 hums," and people dive right in and try to figure it out, more often than not with positive results.  PRR's ability to sense the individual's level of understanding and tailor his posts accordingly is astounding.  He uses nice simple words when educating me yet keeps it just challenging enough to where I have to keep on my toes.  Tubenit closes every post "with respect" which I have found to be most sincere and not just a catch phrase.  His ExpressSCH work is wonderful and a wealth of knowledge in itself.  Sluckey and Da Geezer set build standards I can only hope to one day achieve.  Of course they both often give out some of the best tips.  Doug is the glue that holds the tolex on this forum.  His library alone is second to none.  I could go on and on kissing ass, but I'll just finish it off by paying kudos to the community at large.  There's a ton of sharp people here.  I've learned more about electronics in a year here than in the rest of my life.  It's great to be a part of a community that enriches my mind vs. farting away the hours.  A most sincere thank you to one and all.

-Richard

fdsalvo,
Wow, that's tough.  You mentioned your band, what about family?  What kind of stuff do you guys play?  After all, there was/is more to Nawlins than Jazz!  What brought you to this site?

I have to agree with the previous posts.  I learn something new every time I come to this place.  And the folks here are fantastic.  My previous post was obviously in fun, because Ken really is a pretty decent guy - even for a keylord player!  But I still can not understand why Tubenit keeps offering me his services for free.....

Hey, dude.  The family is safe!  My parents moved out of town a year before it hit, so they were out of harm's way.

My band decided to leave the 2 days prior to landfall and I almost declined!  We packed all of our gear upsatirs at my friend's house and left town.  We stayed in Baton Rouge and watched things unfold.  We ended up having to sneak back in past military road blocks and "steal" our gear back.  There were looters that would've taken it if we hadn't got there first.  That house?  It was banged up really bad and unlivable.  But we have no complaints, we didn't lose family or friends.

The band plays original rock and in New Orleans, if you aren't playing the blues or jazz, you face harsh criticism from the local industry.  We persevered and gained recognition there and eventually doors started opening.

I found my way to Hoffman's website back in 2000- I was cruising the net/checking out prices on original 5e3s and I stumbled upon the "kits".  One thing led to another and I ended up buying my parts from him.  I loved the underlying sarcasm in his website and my love affair with the smell of solder began.  I built my first amp (5e3) in 2001 and built a few others in diff formats and hung up the iron when I joined the band in 2002.  I haven't build since, but have been recently amassing parts for a new head!  I've been bitten by the bug again.

I stumbled into this forum a few months ago when I started researching what I wanted to build and I'm glad I did.  I have alot to learn and I'm glad i have access to you all.  You guys rock and have not only inspired me, but have given me the confidence to approach my next build.

Regards,

Probably more love/hate like the rest of us Ford owners.  Love it enough to keep it around, practical enough not to rely on it too much...I cruise a Ford Thunderbird, but a German compact car gets me to work and back plus anywhere over 60 miles.
