Hey Doug-

Good to see you again.  Strange to see you pop up in the UrT forums.  I saw your EL34 moniker and thought that the coincidence was too much.  Never knew you gamed(?).  At any rate, feel free to stop by the Beer-Garden servers when you are doing some UrT gaming.  They are usually in the top 50 (popularity) and are in Dallas so your ping should be good.  I'm a server/game admin there and would enjoy going a few in game rounds with you, catching up on some music chat, or at least showing you around.  I use the handle Diggs or Judge_Dead in-game.

Hope all is well.

Wow, that was weird running into you on that forum.

No one answered my questions.

Was the server I played on set up like that or is Urban Terror now that fast, like Q3 fast?
Spawn protection was zero.

I seems to remember slower running movements and spawn protection times in UT.

Could just be a bad memory bank.

Actually I get great pings to Dallas.
There is a major pipe that my ISP is tied to.
When I ping servers in Dallas, I get lower pings than Atlanta for some reason.

I should be able to see you in QTracker?
Sounds fun, I'll stop by, go easy on me. :)

Not knowing what server you were playing on I can't say for sure that it wasn't sped up, but UrT is comparatively fast and I have never seen a sped up server like I have in Quake.  (We do low gravity once in awhile - think Neo in the Matrix).  Since it seems you know how to strafe jump then yes, you can really get moving.  Especially compared to the Far Cry(s) and Crysis.  If you were not wearing a Kevlar vest then you had twice the stamina for long strafe jumping runs across the maps.

There is spawn protection.  It is a server setting.  Default is 2 seconds.  We keep our servers at 4-5 seconds.  Spawn killing doesn't have the big negative stigma in this game that it has in on-line Far Cry.

Our servers have the name "++Beer-Garden++".  One is just a 2 map server with 2 of the easier maps to give newer players a chance to get comfortable.  The other has a full map rotation.  Both are TDM.

Beer-Garden also runs another 3-4 servers of different game types.  Nexuiz, Quake 3, Elite Force, World of Padman, etc.  All games hosted at the Beer-Garden are multi-platform and open source.  You will always see allot of Linux and Mac gamers along with Windows.

Anyway, great to "see" you again.  Life took a few big changes (downsized the family for one) and I don't play as much as I used to.  Being a Mr. Mom takes quite a bit of time.

Hope to catch you in game and you can always stop by the Beer-Garden forums at-

Ah, ok, no, I did not have a kevlar vest.

What's the best setup for most smallish maps with lots of action?

Everyone seemed to have a G36 for the main weapon?

g36, uzi, .50 cal pistoL?

I'll pop by and play a few games

Everyone has their favorites, but on small maps I like the vest, helmet, LR300 w/silencer (more accurate with silencer).  I don't carry a secondary, you can pick one up quick enough.

Big maps, the G36, helmet and med kit, no secondary.  Without the vest you can really get around a big map and since you tend to live longer on the big maps I carry the med kit for me and my mates.

Game on...

Thanks for the info.
Your server sounds like fun.
I'll try and pop by this week.

I use Qtracker to find games, I should be able to find you in Qtracker

I've seen those servers around. Didn't know +++Beer Garden+++ was in Tx.

Know anything of the newer DallasUrT servers?  Was saddened when TexasUT slipped away to nothingness years back.

Gman probably would.

I popped into his Beer Garden server a few times and played just enough to remember/get a feel for UT physics and gamplay.
I used to love it years ago, but it didn't do that much for me.

Well, that was winter time, and once spring time hit, there were so many other things to do, I have not gamed in a few months now.  :D

I really wish Far Cry 2 had worked out. Too bad UBI dropped the ball and let the game die. That game had nice physics, great weapons and the coolist map editor on the planet.

I like the slower, closer to real life type game play for army shooter type games and prefer the way fast strafe jumping type game play for older games like Quake 3. If I am going to run around at hyper speed I want a rail gun and rocket gun.
I miss Quake 3 sometimes.  :-[

Dang Doug!  Saw a player named "morecowbell" on my server monitor tonight and by the time I joined they were gone.  I'm assuming it was you.  Sorry I missed you.

We'll try another time.

Hey G,
No, wasn't me.
I use EL34 where ever I travel on the web.

Looks like last winter was the last time I played on your server.

Have not played any games for a while now, too many things going on.
Maybe again this coming winter when it's cold and dark outside.

see ya

ANYBODY following this conversation, pay attention.

the h2o ppl seem to be lazy, yes, lazy... they don't want "demos" of hackers/botters because it's too much work to go through the poor/new player accusational demos to find the real ones, so by the time you get someone on by going through the IRC system they can turn off the hacks as they see admin popping in, or disappear. (exception to their rule is demos are allowed of their clan members are the ones being reported.)

ALSO apparently being TK'd and pointing it out isn't allowed, especially when there's a bunch of TKing clowns on. (also seems like the TK allowance is pretty high.)

I don't recommend these Dallas based jokers to anybody.

Apparently the h2o clan don't want to be bothered with going through recored videos to find cheaters (those using aimbots, wall-hacks, etc) unless you go through all the trouble of attempting to find one of their members on their ICQ chat channel and get them to go check it out... allegedly due to too many new players calling cheat on older, non-cheating, good players.

I apparently got banned (without any warning) from their servers (no real loss, I guess, in the end due to their attitudes.) because I was calling out on TKers (Team Killers: players, when FF (Friendly Fire) is on, will "kill" you, or any of your other team members, not caring that they are on the same team.)

Ok, That one I got.

yeah, any game that has a huge number of players eventually draws in a bunch of lame cheaters.
It really sucks.

Back when I played a bunch of Quake 3, a aimbot hack came out.
You could see people coming on the other side of walls.
The aimbot would just put your crosshairs on the player automatically.

I found the hack on the web and the downloaded it to test it.
I took some demo footage to show people on a popular Q3 forum and posted the demo's.
ID software got on the stick and patched Q3 soon after that and we were back in business.

I guess since UT is basicallty the Q3 engine and it is open source now, it's probably easy for hackers to dream up new hacks.

-----------------

I was playing a bunch of Far Cry2 last winter when a hack came out.
I was on a server and there was this guy that could move in hyperspeed.
It was just about impossible to shoot him.
Fotunately, he was so lame that could could not aim his weapons.
I guess that hack is still out there because I see people complaining on the Far Cry2 forum

Crap like that ruins the game
Then you get the newbies that cry hack every time they die.
Everyone usually tells them to STFU, that they just suck because they are new at it and that the other player is a good player.
