Visio 1/2W MF resistor stencil set
« on: January 17, 2009, 11:33:38 am »
I've made a Visio stencil set for 1/2W MF resistors. All common values. The leads are already sized to approx 60mm (the size Doug sells), so when you drop a resistor on your layout and the leads don't reach the terminals, it means your terminals are too far apart.

Let me know if you want the file. It's approx 750K. Here's a sample...
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Sluckey,

I don't have Visio but a number of the guys do. However, I love the way your layouts turn out from your drawing. They look really sharp. For a layout, the Visio program is alot better than the SCH stuff, IMO.

How about putting what you've drawn up in the non-SCH schematic forum here:

Jeff, the Visio files are just too big and also have extensions that are not allowed.

We've tossed some hosting ideas around before and haven't come up with a viable solution yet.  My website has been down expecting a new flash-based approach, but that's just not happening right now, so it's just sitting out there not doing anything.  I could put the old one back up, but I've been having trouble trying to balance out amp work and my real job anyway.  The real job is demanding as all get out, so I've mostly decided to let amp work slip back to the hobby level and wait until I retire within the next 10 to 12 years to make another serious stab at it then.

I said all that to say this, give me a week or two to get some things finished that have come in recently and need to go out pronto, and I'll set up a section just for Visio downloads.  I feel sure I've got the bandwidth to handle it.  I've been trying to get into Visio in a bigger way anyway.  You can send me whatever you want to share then, I'll get it on the server, and it'll be available to all of us.  I think I'm going to put a few pages up for my radios and other high voltage stuff while I'm at it.

If this sounds okay to Steve and everyone, then give me a couple of weeks and it'll be done.  In the meantime, I'm open to any suggestions regarding appearance or whatever anyone can think of they'd like to see there.  I'm a basic HTML guy, so keep that in mind.

Here you go. Just unzip into your "Documents/My Shapes" folder (or wherever you keep your stencils).

http://home.comcast.net/~seluckey/Visio_MF_Resistors.zip

The 86K zipfile will expand to 750K. It will only be up for a short while.

Got it.  I'll get with you offline later and we'll work out what I need to put on the site.  I think I've got most of yours and Barry's stuff already and I've made some stuff myself.  I can also put up completed layouts or whatever else.  I'll email you or something later.

Beautiful!  I downloaded it too.  Thank you for sharing.

Question:
Why did you elect for the 4 band number scheme?

'Cause that's what Doug sent me last week.     ;)

They're a bitch to read even when you have them in hand. I actually had to tape them to a piece of cardboard, measure them, and write the value beside them while I was working on that Lightning board. I have a few NTE brand that are 3 band code and very easy to read, just like CCs. I'm not likely to ever use those again. Wish Doug would change to the NTEs or similar 3 band.

Ah.... so the drawing matches the parts.  4 band color code is like nanofarad for me, I have to stop and and count on my fingers.  Again those are beautiful stencils.

The 4 band system is awkward to me too, but I can adapt. The dream killer for me though, is the skinny bands! There just ain't a big enough splotch of color for my old eyes to quickly and accurately determine what color the band is. And the blue body color seems to bleed thru some of the bands, causing further confusion. Using a meter to verify values are within tolerance is one thing. Having to use a meter to select the correct resistor from a bowl is waaaaay too much trouble for me. I'll stick to the easy colors from now on.

OTOH, I do like the way you can shove 4 leads into the top of a small turret. Can't do that with my old milspec CCs!    ;D

Buttery, I may make a 3-band set of MF resistors just for you and me.  ;)

I updated the zip file to include a set of 3-Band and 4-Band 1/2 watt MF resistors. You may want to download the newer zipfile.

Hey Barry. You gotta be quick! I already took it down.   ;D

It's back up now though. I'll leave it there for another week.

http://www.butterylicious.com/Images/Slucky%27s-Corner.vsd

Here is a BarbieŽ colored set of resistors.  I have not made it into a stencil set yet.  It started out in the upper left corner of a D size drawing.  I copy and pasted it to an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet.  The sheet is formatted 1:1 in standard (fractional not decimal) inches.  The resistors are layered "resistors".  W/O looking I recall there are the following layers also: text, guides, and caps, but caps has not been used.  The 1/2 watt and 2 watters are based on carbon comp.  The 5 watters are based on cermet but I made them match the BarbieŽ carbon comps just so it'd be easy to read.  I set the lead length at .25" which is a safe minimum for turret spacing.  I tend to crowd thangs.

Enjoy,

-Richard

I cannot see most of the colors anymore but in real practice use my Fluke to sort them out. I check every component I use anyway. If these were just a blue resistor shape with the value printed on them it would work for me and help eliminate mistakes...
Not observing amp safety can kill you!
