 Wood Clamps for Cabinets
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to share a bit of info:
When I was building my first cabinet for a Bassman clone I ran into a problem with clamping the sides to the top and bottom. I use blind dovetail joints. Sometime the center of the joint will not seat properly. To eliminate this I devised a set of clamps. Take two pieces of 2x2x16 inch oak and drill 2 half inch holes approximately 1 inch in and in the center of each piece. Now insert 2 3/8" threaded rods into each piece securing with washers and nuts. You now have what amounts to a big rectangular clamp that can be used for most applications. You just place the clamp on the floor(using a suitable piece of cardboard to prevent the glue from running on the floor), set in the cabinet and tighten the nuts with a wrench. You can keep the rod from turning by using vise grips to hold the center of the rod. The oak provides a sturdy surface and applies pressure across the full width if the joint. Two clamps are needed and can be built for less than $20.00.

Old tweed Bassmans used a 5/16" baffle board. It was secured top and bottom only. This allows the whole board to float at the sides and work with the speakers and really affects the tone. 5/16" board is no longer available, however, Home Depot has 11/32" inch plywood in 2'x2' pieces which is what I use for all my amps.

Most of the real lumber yards (not K-mart types) sell sheets of MDO (medium density overlay). It's birch plywood which is what was used originally, if I'm correct. I comes primed everywhere I've found it but I don't see that as a problem with grill cloth.

 Dave,
Thanks for the info. I know that this is primarly an electronics forum, but maybe these tips will help someone to build the complete amp.
